Don Andrews is reknowned for his incredible use of vibrant colors - he can mix a dozen colors together and never get mud! (I can also recommend his video for an over-the-shoulder view of Don at work.)

This guy's a sophisticated and accomplished water-colorist, but what he has to teach in this book goes beyond a single medium. No wonder this has become one of those cult books.

Paper over hardback boards with over 100 illustrations, mostly in color. 143 pp.

4.0 out of 5 stars Step outside the box 25 April 2010

My watercolor teacher recommended this to the class. This is an excellent book for someone wanting to understand how to bring out the human figure through shading and playing with lights and darks. It takes you out of your comfort zone. It stretches you by using atypical colors for skin tones like blues, purples, and green. Sounds odd but it is amazing.

I think this book was beyond my abilities but would be wonderful for a more advanced student.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book to Help Loosen Up Your Style 19 Dec 2013
By JANEO - Published on
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
A bit surprised at the looseness of the style of the author, but some really good information and ideas. Author uses color in some very interesting ways for portraiture. You won't like it if you are a "realist" artist, but for those looking for a style that is loose and free flowing, this is a good read, and has lots of illustrations.
