Product Description

Review

'I have been using this book since it was published - recommending it to undergraduate and postgraduate students both as the definitive account of the IPA approach and as an accessible introduction to experiential qualitative research more broadly. The chapters on designing an IPA study, collecting and analysing data, and writing up an IPA study in particular are excellent...This book remains an invaluable addition to the toolkit of resources for teachers and students of qualitative research, and I thoroughly recommend it to both' -
Psychology: Learning and Teaching, Volume 9, Number 1

Product Description

'It is not often I can use "accessible" and "phenomenology" in the same sentence, but reading the new book, Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis…certainly provides me the occasion to do so. I can say this because these authors provide an engaging and clear introduction to a relatively new analytical approach' - The Weekly Qualitative Report

Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) is an increasingly popular approach to qualitative inquiry. This handy text covers its theoretical foundations and provides a detailed guide to conducting IPA research.

Extended worked examples from the authors' own studies in health, sexuality, psychological distress and identity illustrate the breadth and depth of IPA research.

Each of the chapters also offers a guide to other good exemplars of IPA research in the designated area. The final section of the book considers how IPA connects with other contemporary qualitative approaches like discourse and narrative analysis and how it addresses issues to do with validity. The book is written in an accessible style and will be extremely useful to students and researchers in psychology and related disciplines in the health and social sciences.

My new companion 21 July 2009
By Ms M
Format:Paperback
I brought this book, as i am in the middle of writing my dissertation. unfortunately, not many lecturers understnad or have used IPA as a form of analysis before. This book has been so useful it has given me a step by step guide and has been my bible over the last couple of weeks. Thank you Mr Smith, Flowers and Larkin!!! I would have liked to have seen an article on using specialist populations such as children, vulnerable adults or forensic populations. Otherwise this is brilliant! Go buy it

This book offers a detailed overview of the theoretical background of IPA together with a clear step by step guide of using IPA in research. There are also examples of good quality IPA studies and critical evaluations of the IPA methodology. An essential guide for anyone unfamiliar with IPA but wishing to conduct an IPA study, whether this be for undergraduate study or established researchers.

This book is one of the most useful I have come across. I am a PhD student and, as such, do an awful lot of reading around this particular method of data analysis, as it is the one I am using. The first part deals with theoretical foundations and methodology, the second illustrates actual examples and the third part is around issues of validity and quality, with a reference to future issues. Of particular interest is Chapter 5, which takes us through a step by step analytic process, without becoming too prescriptive or limiting innovation and creativity. To be recommended.

a Godsend
an important contribution to the growing field of qualitative study, and a valuable tool for those wanting to research topics that do not fit into the Newtonian science model.
