Product Description

From the label:

Sixth album on Curb from one of Ireland's most enduring artists featuring Brian's Interpretations of songs that he wished he'd written. As the title suggests Brian refreshingly gives his interpretations to a unique collection of beautiful songs which include ‘You Are So Beautiful To Me’ (originally sung by Joe Cocker), "Night & Day" (Frank Sinatra), "Let's Stay Together" (Al Green) and "Gaye" (Clifford T Ward). The album is full of great surprises as Brian effortlessly crosses musical genres and eras – songs from the past and present.

5.0 out of 5 stars listen without prejudice, 23 May 2008
By David M. Graves "gergergranville" (Wales the land of song) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I'm disappointed by two critical reviews of this cd. Artists don't declare to which genre they belong and stick to it as a matter of dogma. What right have listeners to pigeonhole an artist then feel an irrational justification for being upset or annoyed when their expectations are defied, not only does this seem mean-minded, it is small minded and only the listener loses out as a result. If you have an eclectic cd collection why on earth deny an artist an eclectic repertoire, particularly an artist who is defined only, by his beautiful and versatile voice.

I first saw Brian Kennedy many years ago when he was backing and harmonising with Van Morrison on stage, the experience ranged from mystical to mystifying but I bought "A Better Man" on the strength of his performance. His music has surprised and bewitched me ever since, whether through his own compositions, in reviving traditional songs or interpreting the songs of Neil Young, Ewan McColl and others.

This CD is different again, and whilst it doesn't equal "A Better man" or "Now That I Know What I Want" it is worth buying for one track alone the delicate rendition of Van Morrisons "Brown Eyed Girl" to which he lends a beautiful, wistful melancholy as he delivers it as a delicate ballad. A new interpretation and a new desert Island disk for my list! "Answer me, my love" is also given a thoughtful airing as good as Joni Mitchells haunting rendition.

Listen without prejudice, don't cloud judgement with unmet expectations and there is much to enjoy here and I give it 5 stars if only to compensate for the narrow mindedness others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, 2 Jun 2008

I think the other reviews here a bit harsh. I loved the album. I admit it's not one for driving too but for lying in bed with headphones, as lets face it most of BKs albums are. I think he has chosen some lovely songs and really makes them his own with his distinctive voice and style.

1.0 out of 5 stars Get It Right Next Time - Please!!!, 17 Mar 2008
Words cannot describe how disappointed I am with this album. I listened to it in the car as I was driving around over the weekend and I found it almost too embarrassing to listen to. I've thought long and hard about what I was actually hearing but I'm afraid I just don't get it.

The version of 'Galileo' is appalling and ruins what is a truly superb song. Other songs such as 'Get It Right Next Time' and 'Lets Stay Together' defy description! Bad karaoke comes to mind really. Most of these songs sung with orchestral arrangements etc supporting.... ugh.

All far removed from the Brian Kennedy, I first discovered and enjoyed. I accept that artists develop and change over time and the 18 years since I first saw him is certainly a long period of time in which to do that. However, this is the time to leave Brian Kennedy to carry on his journey without me. For those who want to continue... I hope you continue to enjoy what he now does.

As for 'Galileo' - I'd recommend listening to the version by the guy who originally wrote the song: - Declan O'Rourke on his `Since Kyabram' album. For another excellent version, listen to Eddi Reader singing it on her `Peacetime' album. Vastly superior!

Even better than that; for some really excellent song writing and passionate delivery - check out his brother, Bap's last albums - 'Lonely Street' and 'The Big Picture' - Superb!
