Invaluable Resource for Interpreters/Guides 4 Aug. 2013
By Tim F. Merriman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Sam Ham's 1992 book, Environmental Interpretation, has been a valued text and resource since its release, but this is not just a rewrite of that. This book uses the most current cognitive psychology, brain science, communication and educational research to provide all of us who interpret nature, science and history with an approach that can make a difference. It really gets at how persuasion and influence of behavior really works by deepening understanding. Sam took his time writing this book and invited many other professionals to comment along the way and give advice to make it the best possible resource. Like everything he writes it is practical and very readable. I highly recommend it as either a text or for personal professional development for anyone who works in interpretation in any role. It takes thematic interpretation to a new level of sophistication and understanding.

Interpretation, Making A Difference on Purpose by Sam Ham 26 Jun. 2013
By Elizabeth Hammack - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
As a college instructor and a State Parks Manager, I can say with all honesty that Sam Ham's book, " Interpretation, Making a Difference on Purpose" is the most important and relevant interpretation book to have in your library or use as a text for a college course. I think what sets this book apart from other interpretation texts is Ham's innate ability to explain the research behind why we do what we do. One of my favorite chapters is "The Endgame" which carefully illustrates the results interpreters can achieve when creating a program with specific goals that may ultimately influence audience behavior. Additionally, each chapter is full of examples that interpreters (both new and seasoned) can use in all interpretive endeavors whether conducting a program or creating an exhibit.
I see our profession flourishing with the new ideas and insight Ham shares in this valuable book.

A must-read! 17 July 2013
By Dr. David Bucy - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
The list of classics in the interpretive profession just got longer. Interpretation: Making a Difference on Purpose is a 'must-read' for anyone associated with the field, from front-line interpreters to writers, graphic designers, multi-media specialists, web-site designers and others. With his TORE model Sam provides clear direction on how to develop interpretive strategies that captivate and communicate to truly make a difference - no small feat in a world full of stimuli competing for a visitor's limited time and attention! But the 'how to' is not the only valuable take-away. Sam's explanation of why the model works, grounded in cognitive research into how the brain functions, should give interpreters confidence that they can and will make a difference by following the TORE approach.

Excellent resource for interpreters! 1 Aug. 2013
By Brenda Lackey, Ph.D. - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I've been looking forward to reading Sam's latest book and was not disappointed! True to form, he takes the concepts, principles, and theory underlying interpretation and conveys them in a fluent manner that is easy to comprehend. He provides thorough and transparent explanations of what excellent interpretation is all about, with evidence from communication research to support his concepts. The TORE approach will provide guidance to interpreters far and wide, and Sam has pin-pointed the most fundamental purpose of interpretation...provoking an audience to think. I gained some great new ideas from this book, not only for my own professional development, but for training budding interpreters. My students will be hearing a lot about their "zone of tolerance" this semester!

Another Homerun for Sam Ham 13 July 2013
By Steven Randolph - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
This is probably the most important book ever written on the subject of interpretation. It is incredibly thorough, yet engaging. I found it not only enjoyable to read, but solidly grounded in the empirical research on free-choice learning and communication. That's a rare combination! Museums, botanical gardens, zoos, aquariums, parks, protected areas and heritage tourism organizations simply must have this book in their libraries. I guarantee it will not only answer questions you already have, but many that haven't yet occurred to you.And the detailed index is fabulous! If you are an interpreter of virtually anything, you'll be glad to have the advice Professor Ham offers in this amazing book!
