Product Description

Book Description
The keeping of tropical fish has expanded to become one of the most popular hobbies in the world. Whether you are a novice or an experienced aquarist, this book offers sound, practical advice that will guide you in setting up and stocking your first tank, or help you widen your knowledge and skills. Presented in a lively, easy-to-use format, the information in this book covers all aspects of the hobby, from choosing and maintaining equipment, to the care and breeding of a host of popular fish species.

About the Author
Gina Sandford has been an avid fishkeeper for the past 30 years; her wide-ranging experience embraces both freshwater and marine species, and invertebrates. Her love of natural history first led her to take up the aquarium hobby, and she soon assumed an active part in her local aquatic society. She later became Secretary and Editor for The Catfish Association of Great Britain. Over the years, Gina has become familiar to hobbyists as a regular contributor to various aquatic journals worldwide. In her role as a fishkeeping 'agony aunt', she has given thousands of enthusiasts the benefit of her practical knowledge through her magazine advice columns. She has written several books on tropical fish, and co-authored a number of research reports for animal welfare organizations. Keeping abreast of latest developments in the hobby, she and her husband travel widely, giving lectures on general fishkeeping, catfish, breeding, pond life and furnished aquaria. Avowedly a 'hand-on' aquarist, when she is not tending to her own extensive collection of livestock, she can often be found accompanying local schools on their 'pond-dipping' days!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Book for those Starting a New Aquarium, 12 Oct 2007
By J. Chippindale (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
Gina Sandford is a much respected and well published name in the field of Tropical Fishkeeping. She is the author opf a number of books on the subject and regularly has articles in the Practical Fishkeeping magazine and other magazines and periodicals on the subject.

She is well qualified to answer questions on the subject, particularly questions that may be asked by the beginner starting out with their first aquarium. Like any other pet fish are reliant upon their owner for their welfare and good health, so it makes sense that the more you know about your fish the better qualified you will be to keep them happy.

The book takes on a similar format to the "frequently asked questions" section of many websites and is a terrific sounding board for the beginner who may have their questions answered before they have even asked them, e.g. `Now I have got my fish, what do I feed them on.' As I said pretty basic, but essential for the welfare of the fish. All in all an essential book for those starting out in this wonderful hobby.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and well laid out for beginners, 18 Aug 2001
By A Customer
A good book for beginners, recommended to me by my local fish shop. Well illustrated and laid out, though ultimately lacking in depth for more experienced fishkeepers.
