Product Description

The Interpet Prime Gravel Cleaner range is designed to easily clean cold water or tropical aquarium gravel. The self-start siphoning action ensures that the gravel cleaner is effective and easy to use. All sizes have a 142cm hose and a wide-mouthed nozzle to enable cleaning of hard-to-reach places with ease.
Whilst using the Prime Gravel Cleaner, you are effectively carrying out a water change. Replacement water must be conditioned using Interpet Bioactive Tapsafe in order to protect your fish.

Directions

Place an empty bucket near the aquarium. Grasp the hose with a hand on the cleaner. Submerge the cycliner and cap into aquarium water. Move up and down about five or six times before siphoning begins. Use at least once a month.

From the Manufacturer

Interpet Prime Gravel Cleaner

Available in Mini, Small, Medium, Large, Extra Large
Assembly

Slip the end of the hose over the cap on the cylinder. It may be necessary to heat the tip of the vinyl hose (by holding it under a hot water tap for 5 seconds). The hose must fit tightly. Hot water will also eliminate any kinks.

  • Designed to separate and remove debris from aquarium gravel
  • Wide mouth nozzle for faster cleaning and for hard to reach areas
  • With unique self-start siphon
  • For Coldwater or Tropical aquariums

Bioactive Tapsafe

Whilst using the Prime Gravel Cleaner, you are effectively carrying out a water change. Replacement water must be conditioned using Bioactive Tapsafe in order to protect your fish.

Bioactive Tapsafe removes chlorine, chloramines and also heavy metals. Bioactive Tapsafe adds an Aloe Vera protective colloid that creates a protective barrier around the fish’s delicate skin and gill membranes. It also adds a culture of bacteria and enzymes that consume any excess biological waste in the aquarium and boosts filter performance.

How to Activate Self-Starting Siphon

Place an empty bucket near and below aquarium.

Grasp the hose 10 to 20cm above the top of the Prime Gravel Cleaner (PGC) with hand on top. Place the other end of the hose in the bucket.

Completely submerge PGC cylinder and cap in aquarium water. Keeping the loop of the hose as low as possible, move PGC up and down rapidly five or six times or until siphoning begins.

Some gravel will rise slightly in cylinder as debris is removed, but will fall down as cylinder is lifted. At least once a month, remove about 25% of aquarium water. Ideally change 10-15% every 10 days. Always dose replaced water with Interpet Bioactive Tapsafe.

It takes a few minutes to get used to how this works (siphoning water procedure), but when it starts the flow is faster than you'd think.
The suction of the `head' part is not powerful enough to trap fish and it only just manages to lift the gravel. That's the good thing about this, you place the head over the gravel and wriggle it down to the bottom. The gravel disturbs and releases any grit and muck underneath. The dirt then follows the water flow out into your bucket at the other end. The fish don't seem to mind this thing in their world, it's the plunging back and forth to start siphoning that gets `em rattled, when that's done they settle down.
You've got to work quickly as the tank is emptying all the time. Best to work systematically, going from side to side and backwards. Don't forget to top up the tank with water the same temperature as the existing. Oh, and try to treat tap water with `tap-clear' or `tap-safe' or some other tap water treatment to prevent de-stabilization of tank environment.
We have a 55 litre tank with a 20 inch by 12 inch gravel area, this vacuum works well for the size.
This device saves a lot of time, hassle and stress to your fish.
A good product all round I'd say.

This is a great product at a great price and it does exactly what it says on the tin. Real bonus is the fact that you can decant your tank without having to suck on the end of the pipe. i.e no unwanted mouthfulls of dirty fish water.

My fish are very happy.

I was so impressed with this I felt like eating a tree. It's perfect for the fluval edge 23 litre tank, mainly because its small. I was worried because I have sand in my tank, and I knew it was a gravel cleaner. However, its fine. The sand only gets sucked up if you really push down hard, but I'm sure that would happen if you did it with gravel. Another issue that concerned me was if the water would get sucked up too fast. What I do is put my thumb on the other end of the pipe, so I can take my time cleaning, however after the first go you become familiar with it. If people knew how easy this was too use for the fluval edge, I know it would be the recommended cleaner, especially over the fluval brand one. Probably the best fish tank accessory I've bought off from amazon.

I bought this as a replacement for a different brand that broke and pretty good as far as these things go. For clarity it's a simple large diameter retractable plastic tube which goes directly into a piece of narrow hose, there is no control valve for flow rate, this isn't really an issue since the flow rate isn't as high as my last one which is actually a good thing allowing more attention to be given to cleaning than checking my bucket isn't overflowing.

A lot of (half-witted?) people seem to be complaining about the siphon action, how getting it started messes up their tank, scares their fish, spills water and so on. It's not difficult, allow me to provide instruction:

1. Extend vacuum end place in tank.
2. Suck the other end, watching for the water coming.
3. (optional) prepare a pinch in the hose, pinch to pause the siphon action ... release to restart.
4. Remove hose from mouth and stick in bucket before water reaches mouth.

It really isn't complicated . . .

Loses a star because I think the hose might have been slightly longer.

i have a baby biorb this item is perfect for it. very easy to get started, the water comes out fairly quick so you have to work fast but it is not strong enough to suck up all the media but still manages to get all the dirt out of the tank. overall very impressed with the item. the only gripe i had with it was the original one i bought had to be returned as it was faulty the blue top that secures to the head of the tube was loose and kept falling off. so if anyone has this issue with it just return and get another one as it is not supposed to be like that. i have seen a few reviews that have complained off this problem.
