Bought a brand new machine with XP Pro preinstalled. Apart from the tiny amount of software required for the modem, the only software I myself attempted to install was NIS 2004 Pro. Immediately the brand new, just-out-of-the-box machine started to behave very erratically. Although I could get a connection to my ISP, Internet Explorer wouldn't work at all. Then Live Update (AntiVirus Pro) stopped working. Then, on re-booting, the screen froze, with vertical lines of black blocks testifying to the fact that... er... "all was not right".
Of course, the machine is brand new. NIS 2004 Pro is designed for XP... isn't it? So, I called technical support (for the computer), who said that there are "known conflictual issues" between XP/XP Pro and Symantec products. Not only that, but XP/XP Pro Service Pack 2 (which is designed to fix most of the known bugs and security issues) is not, repeat NOT currently compatible with Symantec products. Symantec is, apparently, "working on a fix".
Finally, I was advised to try system restore, then, if that failed, to reformat the hard drive, re-install XP Pro and start again. The technician added a codicil. He said that his company had ceased to use Symantec products and switched to McAfee, with whom there were no known conflicts.
All these problems with a brand new computer are due entirely to known conflicts between the Symantec NIS 2004 Pro software and XP/XP Pro. "Known" by some, but not by me. However, since you taken the trouble to get this far, you "know" too. So, save yourself the trouble, don't buy this product.
NIS 2004 is obviously the problem. Been on several internet forum sites and it appears this is quite common. Contacted Symantec who deny any issues.
Now looking at other packages and going send NIS 2004 to the best place for it .......the bin!
Be carefull choosing this product - it obviously works on some systems but on others (like mine) it is absolute crap!
BEWARE!!!!!
Even though I think this product is very good, its not worth the extra £10.00 by purchasing the 'pro' Version. Stick to the Standard version, its all you will ever need. Especially when you think about the thousands of computers out there with no protection at all!
