Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Using anti-virus software isn't enough these days; you need to actively block off your PC from online security risks with a firewall. Norton Internet Security 2003 lets you do both, plus it blocks ads, filters spam and includes parental controls.

Setting up a firewall can be complex but the Security Assistant wizard walks you through all the choices you need to make, and it automatically sets up PCs on a home network to work behind the firewall. The Program Scan looks for Internet-enabled software on your system so you can let all your Internet tools have access at once; you can add other software to the list as well. When a program you haven't specified tries to connect the Alert Assistant helps you decide whether to allow it, block it or tweak the settings; it checks both file names and checksums to make sure an application hasn't been tampered with and you get specific suggestions rather than generic tips.

Similarly it uses signatures and detects common techniques rather than just looking at file names to spot incoming attacks. If your PC is attacked, it will block the source address automatically for 30 minutes, and you can see where the attack is coming from. If you need to be completely secure you can block all traffic in and out. And you can easily see how you're protected and if there are any problems from the red and green indicators in the Status display.

If you share your PC, everyone will need anti-virus and firewall protection, but you can choose whether to turn on the ad and spam blocking tools, the privacy controls that protects private information and the parental controls for blocking particular Web sites, Usenet newsgroups and programs. Symantec categorises these so you can keep people away from gambling and job sites as well as adult sites, and you can add specific sites that you want blocked or allowed. It's no substitute for monitoring what children do on your PC but it's certainly a help. You can also configure the settings for privacy, blocking spam and pop-up and pop-under adverts.

Norton AntiVirus 2003 is one of the best anti-virus packages on the market; Norton Firewall is a powerful tool too, and Internet Security 2003 combines them with other useful tools, plus a foolproof setup that protects you without making what you do want to do online too difficult.--Mary Branscombe

Excellent product 8 Oct 2002

Having used Norton Internet Security 2001 in the past and now upgraded to Norton Internet Security 2003, I consider this as a very good choice! I love in particular the new features like Security Monitor as I am in total control over the Internet. Previously when I used the Internet, the Internet was controlling me as the websites can keep on loading something I don't want, such as pop-ups and adverts. I don't need those at all and now I'm free. I can disconnect whatever I don't like, and if I want to, one click is all I need to disconnect or reconnect to the Internet. I feel a lot safer and it's save time from loading rubbish too.

This software is so easier to use and blocks everything that it thinks are bad for me. I can now use the Internet as much as I want. Also, I love the constant updates on the product, as new viruses and threats are discovered every day.

I would recommend this product to everyone who has not yet purchased an Internet security product.

I bought this product when the anti virus software trial period ran out on my new machine, I had also just got broadband and had heard that a firewall was necessary and Norton seemed to have a good reputation... One of the best features is ; when someone tries to attack your machine online the software traces the other computer and displays their location ip address and a map of the world with their location. as a novice that does nothing more than give you a location to swear at and wave but it's still pretty nifty. The only problem I have found is that some sites have links to windows that pop up for another part of their site and annoyingly nis thinks it is an ad pop up so blocks it (i.e. wwe.com) suppose it keeps the kids from hassling you to look at their favorite site though... all told it does what the name suggests...keeps your machine safe from downtime via idiots

Don't buy this product if you want to do anything more than surf the internet. NAV is excellent, but the firewall is a nightmare. I am a home user, but I also use Win2K IIS and Visual Interdev, all of which were working happily on Internet Security 2002. I upgraded because my subscription ran out and I've nearly thrown the PC out of the window three times, having had to uninstall and re-install the firewall.

Each time, IIS works and then it stops working. Without the firewall installed, Visual Interdev connects to and creates new websites on IIS, but as soon as that firewall is reloaded, forget it... and you try and trace what is being blocked. There are too many rules for the products own good and symantec won't support you, not even by email, if you are using what they call "server" products. I wish I hadn't wasted my money. I should have paid for another years subscriptions, at least I could continue to develop software on my PC, just like any other "home" user would expect to.
