Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Modestly subtitled "The Definitive BGP resource", Internet Routing Architectures is published by the book division of that cornerstone of the Internet, Cisco Systems--so you can be sure that the contents therein have come pretty much straight from the horse's mouth. For those unaware, "BGP" is short for Border Gateway Protocol, the de facto inter-domain routing protocol used in the Internet today.

The book is broken down into four sections, an overview of the Internet, routing protocol basics, effective routing design and routing device configuration. It's not a revision aid per se, one that would help you prepare for a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) qualification, and so is laid out as a general reference work. But the book's layout and format does have more than a passing resemblance to a Cisco router manual!

Now it would be an understatement to say that the ground covered by this book is incredibly technical and isn't for the casual reader. It is also true to say that where the subject matter is so complex, it's won't be long before your eyes glaze over. But if you try to over-simplify something that is inherently complicated it loses its meaning. This book succeeds in treading this fine line by introducing technical detail gradually and making use of practical examples whenever possible. And the going only really gets tough in the final chapters. Making this sort of rocket science accessible takes some skill and, more often than not, this book succeeds at that task, though it remains a dry read. Its intended audience is fairly small but for those that do need access to this information, this book is one for the shortlist. --Roger Gann

  • Explore the functions, attributes, and applications of BGP-4, the de facto interdomain routing protocol, through practical scenarios and configuration examples
  • Learn the contemporary Internet structure and understand how to evaluate a service provider in dealing with routing and connectivity issues
  • Master the addressing techniques--including Classless Interdomain Routing (CIDR)--that are demanded today to facilitate the Internet's rapid and continuing growth
  • Develop optimal routing policies--redundancy, traffic balancing, symmetry, and stability--for your network
  • Learn how to seamlessly integrate your intradomain and interdomain routing and manage large and growing autonomous systems

Internet Routing Architectures, Second Edition, explores the ins and outs of interdomain routing network designs with emphasis on BGP-4 (Border Gateway Protocol Version 4)--the de facto interdomain routing protocol.

Using a practical, example-oriented approach, this comprehensive resource provides you with real solutions for ISP connectivity issues. You will learn how to integrate your network on the global Internet and discover how to build large-scale autonomous systems. You will also learn to control expansion of interior routing protocols using BGP-4, design sound and stable networks, configure the required policies using Cisco IOS Software, and explore routing practices and rules on the Internet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, well stuctured, 12 July 1998

A very well structured book on routing. Builds up subject knowledge step at a time. The only shortcoming is that some terms are not defined or explained the first time they are used but left for later discussion. List on inside of covers - excellent idea and quick guide to the slow to learn the new lingo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference, good background, good examples., 25 Jun 1998

The book is a lot more pleasant than reading the BGP RFCs between 1771 and 1997. The Chapter 10/11 presentation style makes life easier than trying to wade through the much drier BGP-4 case studies on the Cisco Web page. Reading this book ahould also give any CCIE aspirants out there a couple of points boost.
