From the Author
Internet Explorer 5.0: The perfect learning platformOne of the overlooked attributes of Internet Explorer 5.0 is that it is a great learning platform for readers who want to learn about object models and scripting. I am a graphic designer and writer by trade, so I understand the angst involved in learning how to script, and trying to decipher authors who assume we know things we don't. The book covers the various object models in IE5 in depth, and demonstrates how to develop script that works with these object models. As such, consider this book a resource for learning how to piece together the vast array of objects in IE5. If you're looking for in-depth specifics, such as how to program COM, this book probably isn't for you. The same is true for XML. Many of the XML implementations in IE5 are not "up to spec," and will change. Several of the IE5 XML implementations were particularly volatile when I was writing the book, so I focused on concept. If you dont know much about XML, I like to think the book provides a good introduction to it. I'd recommend the Alex Homer (XML IE5) or William J. Pardi (XML in Action) book for more thorough examinations of IE5 and XML. If you are knowledgeable about HTML and want to learn how to harness the power of Internet Explorer, hopefully this book will help you do that. And if you're just learning how to script, this book should fit well with your plans. The CD includes a copy of IE5, plus the Microsoft Developer Network Web Workshop library, which contains updated reference material on the IE5 object models. The CD also contains a number of extra chapters with some more fully blown out applications than what appear in the book itself (although there are numerous examples thoughout the print version), and step-by-step instructions for developing them.
