Billy Bragg explores here some of his own influences, so this is quite a serious record, and really quite different from the earlier Bragg work, although a touch of Bragg's traditional whimsy can be seen in "Phil Ochs".
The title track is an arrangement of the famous socialist hymn, backed by a brass band - a rip roaring singalong. Equally singable is "Jerusalem", which before getting this album I hadn't sung along to since schooldays (some 20 years). At the other end of the scale are the tender "Nicaragua Nicaraguita" (a song of the revolution in Nicaragua) and "My Youngest Son Came Home Today" - the latter coming from the same pen as "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda", but this time a lament from a more recent war - the troubles in Ireland. Billy Bragg's "Red Flag" is the traditional anthem, but set to a lively folk tune rather than the more familiar dirge used in Labour party conferences of the past.
The only downside to this album is that it's too short! No Billy Bragg fan should be without a copy of "The Internationale".

A great mini-album which any Bragg fan shouldn't be without. It includesthe socialist hymn the International and also a very restrained and wellsung version of Blake's 'Jerusalem'.
Final song 'My Youngest Son camehome today' is surely amongst the most moving and emotionally hard hittingthat Bragg has ever done. Despite only having 7 songs this is definitelyworth buying especially since none of these songs appear to be availableelsewhere on collections etc.

Billy's finest recording?

Whether you agree with Billy's politics or not, you can't help but be impressed with the emotion of "My Youngest Some Came Home Today" or the sharp lyrics of "Marching Song of the Covert Battalions." It seems that musicians just don't record this sort of gutsy material anymore. Nowadays, "taking a chance" means offending as many people as possible with obscenities or lewd behavior, but there was a time when musicians believed that taking a chance had to do with performing intellectually bold content that had real social value. Billy Bragg is one of those people. Steve Earle is another. It's a shame there aren't more like them anymore. If you want a stellar example of a talented musician performing gutsy, meaty songs, then listen to this cd.

This is a great album. There is a breadth of tone and subject matter, though all the songs come from Billy Bragg's perspective, and are quite political in nature. To specifically address one criticism on this site, Billy did not write a new tune for 'The Red Flag', he states that he is returning the lyrics to their ORIGINAL tune, which is a lively Irish reel; the effect is to give the song the energy and enthusiam it requires.

Hey, I'm a socialist, do you really expect me to give this CD a bad review? *chuckle* Great stuff. Bragg's "The Red Flag" is fun to dance to, I might add. And just did. Heh!
