Review

"One of the best collections of essays on international relations theory currently available. Strongly recommended." Michael N. Barnett, University of Minnesota, USA

Product Description

Drawing on a wealth of expertise from an international team of contributors, the second edition of International Relations Theory presents a diverse selection of theoretical positions, from historically dominant traditions through to powerful critical voices since the 1980s. Each chapter explains the theoretical background to the position taken, and outlines how and why the theories are relevant. Students are encouraged to analyse and debate the issues presented in the text before deciding which of the theories they believe to be most useful when explaining and understanding international relations. The text is accompanied by an Online Resource Centre providing additional resources for lecturers and students. Lecturer resources: PowerPoint slides Figures and tables from the textbook Student resources: Web links Flashcard glossary Revision guide

Provides a great overview of the world of IR for any undergrad. Sections contain detail and case studies as well as references for further reading.

Great book 29 Oct 2010
By tvas22
This book is a great companion to any study of international relations. It is understandable and split up neatly, but at the same time it isn't simplified and still provides a great deal of insight to the different disciplines.

Don't even think about it. 29 Dec 2011

My entire class (undergrads) complained to our teacher numerous times about this book. This book is written for people who have a deep, prior knowledge of IR. If you're reading this with little IR training, you will be lost. The whole book is worded poorly, and it makes certain theories MUCH more difficult than they actually are.
Perfect IR theory overview for doctoral students 7 Dec 2011
By Dr.U - Published on Amazon.com
This would definitely not be my choice of textbook for undergraduates. However, for graduate students that need an overview of the major theories of IR - this is one of the best books I've seen to date. Each chapter is written by a prominent academic and focuses on a one of the major theories. Moreover, the chapters name all of the major theorists and their contributions, as well as giving an in-depth look at one major book or article and a case study for each theory. The first two chapters also talk about the great debates in the field and give a general overview of what theory is (focus on normative). The concluding chapter looks to the future of the discipline. In sum, this book is perfect for a doctoral student that needs a good balance between an overview and some specifics - as in if you are reviewing for comprehensive exams or taking an intro to IR theory course.

Difficult Read 21 Feb 2011

This has been the most difficult book I have read during my studies in International Relations. I found the book to be too scholarly and not geared towards students.
