Malcolm Shaw's engaging and authoritative International Law has become the definitive textbook for instructors and students alike, in this increasingly popular field of academic study. The hallmark writing style provides a stimulating account, motivating students to explore the subject more fully, while maintaining detail and academic rigour. The analysis integrated in the textbook challenges students to develop critical thinking skills. The sixth edition is comprehensively updated throughout and is carefully constructed to reflect current teaching trends and course coverage. The International Court of Justice is now examined in a separate dedicated chapter and there is a new chapter on international criminal law. The detailed references and reliable, consistent commentary which distinguished previous editions remain, making this essential reading for all students of international law whether they be at undergraduate level, postgraduate level or professional lawyers.

Product Description

'Malcolm Shaw's International Law has been an indispensable resource for students of international law since its first publication in 1977. It gives an accurate and well-balanced account of the development and current state of the law. In light of recent developments, the new chapters on international criminal law and the International Court of Justice are welcome. I warmly recommend Shaw to anyone studying international law at undergraduate or graduate level.' James Crawford, The Lauterpacht Centre for International Law, University of Cambridge

'When I was teaching Shaw's International Law was my textbook of choice for the students. I continue today to find this book very useful and well organized. It is good news that a Sixth Edition guarantees that it remains thoroughly contemporary, with new chapters added and everything updated.' Dame Rosalyn Higgins, President of the International Court of Justice

'Shaw's treatise has been praised as being particularly well suited for 'novice' students of the field … it is surprisingly user-friendly.' American Journal of International Law

'An outstanding treatise which I use regularly in the course of my work at the Court. It excels in precision, comprehensiveness and topicality. On many issues, like questions of territory, it has no equal in any language. And last but not least, it reads well.' Bruno Simma, Judge, International Court of Justice

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good 6 Jan 2011

Its a very in depth book, The reason I would not give it 5 stars is because as a student I dont find it the most accessesable, it seems more designed for an older audience (the author had once said he has also written it for people in the govenment to use as reference). Also I agree with other reviews, it doesnt go into detail about cases which is a shame, but apart from that, all the information you need on International Law is there, it will just take you some time to get through it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very thorough work 1 Nov 2009
Shaw will take you through all the nooks and crannies of International Law. Thorough and interesting read. Too thick and thus not easy to carry, though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly readable 8 Jun 2014

You can actually get into this even if you are not studying the subject for more than merely to improve your general knowledge. There's a lot of it and I suggest keeping it in the bathroom so as to dip into it in small sittings, so to speak.

4.0 out of 5 stars Maybe a better editor was needed 20 Sep 2014

It was a bit dense at times and some of the sentences were quite convoluted.
Maybe a better editor was needed!
But in general, it was very informative and not too difficult to follow. More in depth than some books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book with some minor flaws 15 Jan 2011
Shaw's work is a well written work which clearly goes through all the important parts of international law. It is almost an enjoyable read, and I found it particularly accessible for such a hefty legal tome. A lot of the book was outwith the scope of my particular study, however I can see it covering almost everything required by all but those required nitty gritty specifics. A few areas were lacking, but this is made up by the depth of many other areas. All in all a good book - and an absolute bargain at [...] second hand!
