From 1989 - 1998, after the Go-Betweens disbanded, Robert Forster and Grant McLennan recorded four albums each. Here their radically different writing styles were showcased; Robert arch and dramatic, Grant earnest and poppy. But the fervour of the fanbase was such that many fans compiled their own new Go-Betweens LPs from the highlights of their respective albums. This curious happening may well have inspired this novel compilation. Various discussions about the album regularly reappeared. Perhaps their songs should be mixed up together. Perhaps it should just be one CD. Sometime in late 2005 after their masterpiece swansong Oceans Apart, Robert and Grant decided that this compilation should at last be brought into the light. The new artistic plateau they had reached with that LP had convinced them that the reformation of the Go-Betweens had to permanent thing and it may well have been the security of that knowledge which allowed them to glance back at their solo years from a safe perspective.
They both quickly chose the songs for their respective albums and Grant came up with the title Intermission. With Grant McLennan's passing on the 6th May 2006, it will be the last time that team works together again It is important to remember that throughout the 80s the Go-Betweens were a cult band and their solo outings would sadly court only a rarified audience. But their influence extended way beyond that generation and forms the roots of so much of the guitarist pop we hear today and there is no other act that began circa 1978 that can match the consistency of their canon. And for those of us who took a punt on their solo albums, discovering such magical gems as Horsebreaker Star and Danger In The Past the rewards were plentiful. It was a reminder of how great these two songwriters were. Forster's isolated vignettes of longing and McLennan's great outpourings of sublime pop music were thrown into relief. All the solo albums are worth your investigation but for now, here are some of the greatest highlights from a fascinating chapter in their career. introduction to a pair of genius

I got all the Go beetweens albums, and I wanted to know how where the albums of their leaders alone, so I decided to get the "Intermission" album.
I must say that all the songs are great and they are as good as those of the go beetweens.
Forster is more arty/pop and Mc Lennan was just a genius of the melodies and guitars.
Now I want to get all their albums.

Planned as a way station between album projects during a year off, "Intermission" becomes a tombstone and artifact for the Go-Betweens with the death of Grant McLennan, suddenly, at age 49 at his home on a night he had gathered his dearest friends to a house party. Robert Forster, his brother in peaceful arms, was there that night too. It's hard to hear these songs from the sojourning solo years, few aimless and barren, most rich with growth and reward, without feeling the melancholy tug of death, unless, of course, you are new to the music. Then what you get is a dream, smart, well-realized, fun, at times shimmery, at times bookish guitar pop from two of the best as they found their way through daily living to the other side that was the happy reunion of the band for three more albums before Grant's end. The cover looks too much like a headstone with a name in a resting place in the ground, a monument is not for pop, even sophisticated, keepable pop such as this. Mostly, I think, it's a thing for friends, a keepsake. "Intermission" was meant as a way of discovery for all the new fans that found them with their last Go-Betweens release, "Oceans Apart." Thinking that you have new fans, and not just a lot of old ones rediscovering you, is a thought full of hope and light as you push into 50 with all your musical instincts and thought process intact, but the deeply engrossed fans the two of them long inspired will already have the original solo albums or want to seek them out. Not all of the work on those solo records is worthy of the obsession, but this just skims that very fine surface, and that desire to dive in and breathe deeply is what loving a great band is all about. apart from mourning, there is still magic in here.
