Product Description

Synopsis

Most interlinear Bibles are superb resources for Greek students. But what about the rest of us who don't know Greek? Here is the answer. While other interlinear Bibles assume that you know Greek, "Interlinear for the Rest of Us" assumes that you don't, or that you've forgotten much of what you once knew. Designed for busy pastors, Sunday school teachers, and anyone who wants a practical tool for studying the Scriptures, this interlinear makes reading easy by flip-flopping the usual order of appearance. It uses the English text as the main text rather than the Greek, so there is absolutely no confusion about the meaning of what you're reading. Discover the Greek words behind the English translation. Conduct your own word studies using Greek word study books - without knowing Greek. "Interlinear for the Rest of Us" offers these features: interlinear passages appear in a "staff" with four interrelated lines (see excerpt). From top to bottom, the lines are: English text in new international version; corresponding Greek words; parsing information; Goodrick-Kohlenberger numbers; and Greek text in normal Greek order at the bottom of the page, underneath the interlinear section.

Mounce's Greek-English Dictionary at the back of this volume, is keyed to both Goodrick-Kohlenberger and Strong's numbering systems. It is ideal for use with Greek for the Rest of Us and other Greek study tools. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great book, absolutely awful printing 18 Aug 2010
By American Elm - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I'm a big fan of Dr. Mounce, having bought his Greek grammar/workbook, his book, "Greek for the Rest of Us", and the lectures from his website. I was really looking forward to "Interlinear for the Rest of Us".

I love the contents and layout of the book. It was exactly what I wanted - a bridge to carry me from beginning Greek to a slightly higher level of Bible study.

The printing, however, is an absolute deal-breaker. The pages are literally onion-skin thin. Besides durability issues, the text is just not very readable. Looking at the page, you see the text, the strike-through from the text on the back of the page, plus the strike-through from either the next or previous page. The result is a distracting, awful mess. Can you read it? Yes. Do you want to? No.

This is the first book I've ever returned to Amazon, and it broke my heart to do it. If it was re-printed on regular paper, I'd be standing in line, waiting to snatch the first copy off of the press. But the readability issue really is that bad; I reluctantly would not recommend the purchase of this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ignore the quibble - buy the book 18 Sep 2007
By David Ewart - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
The quibble in Varner's comment about this work making everyone pretend they are Greek experts is directly addressed in the Preface of Mounce's book: "My prayer is also that you will not think you actually know Greek just because IRU parses the words. Learning a language is an art, one that takes a substantial commitment of time if it is to be done properly. But for those who are not able to spend the time, this text can help you to better understand the Word of God." And to that I say, "Amen."

The most important aid I receive from works such as this is precisely the overcoming of false assumptions that I KNOW "what the text means." All too often, a little digging - using works like Mounce's and Bruce Malina's reveals that my assumptions about the meaning of the plain (English) text on the page was in fact far from the mark. The more preachers and bible study leaders can avail themselves of these works the richer our understanding of Scripture will be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use; accurate results 17 Dec 2007
By T. Johnson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
It would be nice if all pastors and teachers knew Greek. But since they don't (or they know enough to be dangerous), this book is an essential tool. Specifically, we've all heard sermons where a word study was done on the wrong Greek word because the presenter did not use a tool like this Interlinear to discover the appropriate word in Greek. Mounce has now made this easier for "the rest of us." I highly recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars To Learn "KOINE" 11 Nov 2009
By Thomas D. Todd Jr. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I really like this New Testament, Interlinear reversed.
I really like the General Guidelines in the front of the book which explains how some words translate, some transliterate and also some of the troublesome constructions (including idioms).

One thing I don't really care for is the author's choice of using the NIV paragraphings and section names, My personal favorite is the NASB.

I do like the explanations of parsing codes, though I still don't fully understand it, It's like piano. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.

Another dislike is the thin pages, almost like rice paper. This is more than a New Testament, this is a Study Book, and I like to make notes in my books, highlight and write in pen (so I can see it). Several places where I wrote have bled through and as you know, that makes the other side of the page unlegible.

As you can see, I do really like this and it goes well with the text book w/CD I also have. They make a great duo to learn basic greek.

Hope this helps you!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good 30 Nov 2007
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I do not like the use of the NIV with an interlinear, but Mounce does a good job. The only downfall is that I didn't realize the size it would be. I would prefer it to be thicker with more pages than the entire book being a thin notebook paper size book.
