Product Description

Product Description

Jim Shelley loves television. His devotion is not to the programmes that are watched by late night audiences, but to the blockbusters beloved by millions. Usually he is indulgent towards the object of his affections and forgiving when it is slipshod and self-regarding. Yet, like any other lover, there are times when the relationship becomes dull and predictable, and when his irritation boils over into anger. In this work, the very best of Jim Shelley's television criticism is combined, for the first time, with the reactions of his devoted readers, whose emails and letters provide an often scathing running commentary on what he has written. Taken together, they provide a scabrous and darkly amusing commentary on the nation's viewing habits.

Square eyed heaven 26 Sep 2001

I'm often ashamed to admit quite how much I like TV - even terrible TV. Sometimes, the worst TV is the best. Be it Soapstars, 15 to 1, Timewatch or the news, I cannot get enough of my grey cubic friend.
Until now I thought Iwas alone, but I'm not. Jim Shelley loves TV possibly even more than me, plus he's been watching it for years longer and writing the columns I used to read with envy.
This is the tale of one man's cathode passion and how he turned it into a career. Listing every event in his 4:3 life and with every feud [...] told in the kind of detail you would expect from someone who has no life but the one's on screen.
The only problem is, it is so unputdownable, you'll miss your favourite shows.

When I was in England during the late 90's - 2001, I foung Jim Shelley's column something to look forward on a groggy Saturday morning, and to shed such incisive, witty and intelligent criticism on TV, while maintaining a deep love for his subject. There's clearly a major "love/hate" thing going on here - as is often the case in the most passionate relationships. His ability to see through programme-maker's pretensions to their real aims is devastating. His work in the Mirror has necessitated a downfall in quality (or this was the case when I left the UK in Sept) but he is by far the best columnist I have ever read in any paper, anywhere, in any language. Bet that for a recommendation!

If you like Jim Shelley's views, then buy this book. If you find him, as I do, an insufferable hack -- then don't waste your money.
