Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The much anticipated RDI is the industry’s first iPod Speaker with loaded DAB digital radio. The visionary RDI keeps your entertainment options open with a retractable dock tray which will fit all iPod models, and integrated built in DAB/FM so you can switch between listening to your own tunes or crystal clear DAB digital radio.

The RDI is innovatively designed to combine fantastic sound quality along with cutting edge technology. Mid-range 30 watt speakers, tweeters and a bass-boosting 15 watt subwoofer ensure a fantastic low end response and crystal clear treble which make for providing room-filling audiophile quality sound.
Dressed in the latest high gloss piano black finish, the shelf-friendly RDI features a retractable dock tray for your iPod which lends clean lines and a modern, sleek shape. The easy to use remote control is a 23 key infra-red delight. Slimline and full functioning, with adjustable treble and bass so you can tweak the RDI acoustics to suit your personal taste. The remote also has a handy Menu key letting you access all your iPod settings and playlists, as well as allowing you to store up to 8 radio presets, giving you greater sofa control.

There is an alarm clock to boot, letting you wake up from your slumber to your tunes, favourite radio station or an unwelcome but enticing beep. The RDI really does prove that cutting edge technology and high fashion really can go hand in hand. This clever dock will open in DAB mode and will begin to autoscan. After the autoscan has completed the RDI will start to play the first station found in alphanumeric order. The RDI control panel is extremely easy to use allowing you to swap easily between FM radio, DAB radio and iPod speaker dock.

To listen to your iPod simply press the centre of the drawer where the Intempo logo is positioned. This will reveal the docking connector, simply dock your iPod, select Ipod with the mode key and get dancing! You are not restricted to iPod listening either as the RDI is supplied with an AUX-IN socket allowing you to connect any external audio device such as an MP3, mobile phone or even a TV, the sound really is that good. The beautiful RDI is fitted with a white LCD display which you can change to show station information, date and time or the scrolling DAB information as required.

It's so easy
It's always been tricky to find stations with your normal analogue radio. DAB digital radios make listening much easier because they automatically search for all available stations and then store them in alphanumeric order. Now all you do is scroll through the list, click the one you like and start listening.

More choice to listen to
There are up to 65 DAB stations available in many areas, with more being added all the time. From traditional favorites such as the wide range of BBC stations to newer up and coming stations. Firm favorites such as Talk Sport, Radio 5 live and Classic FM are all available on DAB. There are also a number of exciting stations that are exclusive to DAB like, BBC6 music, BBC7 and Planet Rock.

DAB Digital Sound Quality
DAB radio offers the opportunity to listen interference free to the best that radio broadcast has to offer. It’s crystal clear because it’s a digitally transmitted signal. To listen to music from your iPhone without interference just switch to airplane mode.

I bought this DAB radio about a year and a half ago and it's already broken. It doesn't tune into any stations and when playing music off an ipod it keeps cutting in and out. I'm not impressed and would advise you not to buy this.

I purchased one of these as a present for my wife for use in her office. We were happy with the sound quality, features etc. but the inserts to take her ipod do not fit the docking tray. They are just too big to fit the tray flush to allow it to close.

I have e-mailed intempo three times even resorted to snail mail but they just ignore you.

The RDi does work without the inserts but it feels fragile without the proper support.

So beware, don't expect any customer service from this company.

Well if you want a Ipod/ speaker/FM/DAB/recharger here it is.
Looks great. Sound a little thin but improves by boosting the bass.
DAB good but arial poor ... would advise them to allow a place you could add an additional arial.
Poor Alarm facility.
FM reception not good for me.

None the less great to take away on holiday or in the kitchen etc.
NOT up to Bose / Klipsch in sound quality . So if its sound you are after go for a Klipsch andget a small Roberts DAB radio!!!

Review Part 2 ... February 2010
Well on reflection ... I think I was too kind to this unit. I have had problems with the reception and the speakers have cutout. Now it is defunct and the insides look pretty shoddy to me. I hve given up on it. I have replaced it with a small Panasonic Unit with a DVD/ Ipod player. Much better quality. I would knock off 1 star now

June 2010

On second thoughts a single star would be a better statement of this ... not well made at all !!

I first saw the RDI in the press a couple of months ago and contacted Intempo to try to buy. To be fair to them they did say it would be towards the end of November but Im an impatient sort when I set my mind on something!

Intempo contacted me a week ago and suggested I order through Amazon as they were close to delivery. (good customer service by the way.) The little beauty arrived this morning and I must say I am very pleased it was well worth the wait.

The unit itself is a nice bookshelf size, in glossy black, it came with all relevant adapters and both euro and UK plugs. When turned on the unit automatically searched for all DAB stations (found 48 and Im in an amber area)at this point the unit defaults to DAb, to switch to fm, or Ipod you simply press the mode botton. Sound on DAB is very impressive and when playing in Ipod mode even more so. Intempo claim the delay was caused by adding tweeters, if this is the case then good call! classic FM sounded fantastic at top end.

Good quality remote control, amazing sound, DAB included all for £129.99. I would recommend this unit to everyone. Intempo has a winner on their hands I only hope they haven't underestimated demand.

I would like to inject a level of caution into all these rave reviews. Based on them I have bought an RDI through amazon. My initial feelings are not 5 star. I listen almost exclusively to classical music, though of many different kinds. Out of the box the unit is harsh in the top end. After 24 hrs of continual playing in a back room (not nearly long enough I know) the unit is mellowing as would be expected of speaker units but some other nasties are rearing their heads. Principal among these is a buzzing in DAB mode. FM is generally better although that would appear to have some kind of automatic noise suppression circuitry in operation. I have a Pure 1S to hand so have been able to compare side by side. So if you listen to music such as classical and other sound sources where there are times of quiet or silence, you may find that these faults are more than you can live with. Perhaps it is the best of a very small bunch if you want something with DAB, ipod integration and better sound but if you are expecting the best that it should be possible to make in such a small package at this price then Intempo may not be there for you yet. I look forward to hearing What Hifi's thoughts on the product.

My product has also broken about a year after purchasing it. It cuts in and out sometimes only playing for less than a minute in every ten minutes and crackling madly.

Interestingly my previous review saying this has disappeared...

I can not get in contact with Intempo - I have emailed - no reply, phoned - phone just rings out.

The product was great until it went wrong but what good is that if it goes wrong under the 2 year warranty but you can't get it fixed?

I had one of these bought for me as a mother's day present a couple of years ago now and was really happy with it for about 16 months. Lovely sound, good functionality, reasonable DAB reception and nice looking. It did everything I wanted and I was chuffed. One day the LED display showed a load of gobbledygook and I couldn't tell what mode, radio station or volume number that I was on. The following day the LED display packed up altogether so I had to guess the number of button presses to get it to change mode or increase the volume. I sent this back to the shop and they sent it back to Intempo for me, having already emailed Intempo to ask them what to do. The shop couldn't get me a replacement so I settled with a credit note from them and then I bought another RDI from Amazon as I liked it so much.

Just one month down the line the LED display has packed up AGAIN. Such a shame as I really wanted the second unit to function properly. I genuinely feel sad that I've had to return it for a refund, but I'm not prepared to have another in case the same thing happens. It would have been really great if the LED problem had not occured, but I can only conclude that there much be a design fault.
