Review

'Classical languages are dead, and therefore useless, runs the standard attack; Classics no longer has any contemporary relevance. An Intelligent Person's Guide to Classics offers a series of well-argued and engaging responses to those accusations...' Mary Beard, Times Literary Supplement 'If this book doesn't encourage a rebirth in interest in the Classics, nothing will.' Contemporary Review

Product Description

Peter Jones demystifies the Classics in this personal introduction to a subject often feared by those who do not understand Greek or Latin.

An inspiration 29 Jan 2011
By Ian.S.
Format:Paperback
This is a highly readable general overview of the classics. If ever you want any inspiration to pursue the classics, or if your enthusiasm is flagging, then turn to this book. It covers every aspect of the classics from archaeology, to poetry, philosophy and even archtectural terminology. It also has an excellent 'apologia' for the teaching of classics in school today. Latin pronounciation is discussed as is the Greek language. The chapters are easily digestible and humour is scattered about liberally. The writing is succinct and non-academic. I have had a copy by my side for many years. get a copy if you can, it's well worth the reading.

Great Introduction 8 Mar 2008
By Kyrillos o Bibliothikarios - Published on Amazon.com
Jones is an accomplished scholar who writes with much enthusiasm for his topics. All of Jones' works convey his love of the classics and a desire to get quality information about them disseminated into the public. This inexpensive volume is loaded with interesting information, I mean packed full. The books is arranged so that each chapter is like an essay on a topic. You will learn about the preservation of classical works. A contrast and comparison of Greece to the Ancient Near East is enlightening. The topics are really varied from romance to philosophy. The footnotes are located in the back of the book if you want more information. So I would have to say this book is a great introduction to the Classics arena, worthy every penny.
