The theological compatibility of the theory of evolution
By Howard Jones
John Quenby is Emeritus Professor at Imperial College, London. His main scientific interest has been in astrophysics but he has consequently developed an interest in theology, and particularly in process theology as the basis of interpreting the relation between the natural world and the divine. John MacDonald Smith is a mathematician and physicist who, earlier in his career, worked at Aldermaston nuclear energy complex in the UK but who has now become ordained as a priest in the Church of England and has campaigned against nuclear arms. He has written another book in the science and religion area called `On Doing Without God'.
The present book, published exactly 150 years after Darwin's `Origin of Species' and edited by Quenby and Smith, is an attempt to show that so-called Intelligent Design is an `unproductive dead end' that is both theologically and scientifically incoherent. The sixteen or so contributors to this book point out that Darwin and Wallace's theory not only accounts for a mass of biological and palaeontological evidence but is also not inconsistent with the role of a divine spiritual energy in the creation and sustaining of the universe. The contributors include both scientists and theologians.
A recent survey in America stated that over one-third of Americans wanted creationism taught in schools in place of Darwinism says Smith in his Introduction and, depending on which state you live in, you may well be persecuted for teaching evolution or for teaching creationism. Although this book is about evolution, both biological and cosmic, it is imbued with belief in the validity of the Bible and, in particular, of the principles of Christianity. Each chapter concludes with a wealth of references that are cited in the text. Although there is no Index, this perhaps is unnecessary since each chapter deals with a different topic on the main theme.
This is an important book which, although multi-authored, is eminently readable. It explores evolution thoroughly from many different angles, including Intelligent Design. My principal criticism is that the book is firmly focussed on Christianity and the Bible. The arguments might be more convincing to more people if the analysis could have been presented with regard to any theistic world-view.
Dr Howard A. Jones is the author of The Thoughtful Guide to God (2006) and The Tao of Holism (2008), both published by O Books of Winchester, U.K.; and The World as Spirit published by Fairhill Publishing, Whitland, West Wales, 2011.

Intelligent Faith, 21 July 2011
This review is from: Intelligent Faith: A Celebration of Darwinian Evolution (Paperback)
Top scientists show that belief in God is fully compatible with contemporary science, especially evolution. Though this book is sometimes heavy going it is worth it as a rebuttal of the stereotype that science and religion don't mix.

Let's all Embrace Darwinism, 27 May 2011
This review is from: Intelligent Faith: A Celebration of Darwinian Evolution (Paperback)
A collection of essays by scientists, who are attempting to come to terms with the fact that their religious upbringing was misconceived, and theologians who are having to accept the reality that, with so called "intelligent design" now proven to be nothing more than ridiculous nonsense, if you can't beat 'em, let's be seen to join 'em instead; it might just wash.
It won't.
