Intel Core i5-4690K Quad-Core is part of new and excellent K-series processors, codenamed Devil's Canyon, certainly worth your consideration if you are planning to make good gaming or multimedia system having the high requirements on processor side. Out of the box LGA 1150 socket type processor runs on 3.5 GHz, comes with 6MB of cache and it has unlocked clock multiplier which all makes it fully competitive on current market for more demanding users.

Also, it features improved thermal interface which is placed between the die and integrates heat spreader, therefore it's not only the unlocked version of non-K older brother, but the better made device in terms of dies and design which will endure higher voltage during overclocking.

For reviewing purposes I used it on my primary system intended for multitasking and gaming and I was very pleased with displayed results, both without using overclocking, but especially when overclocked, compared to the older processor i5-4570 3.2GHz. I'll update this review with some more detailed results from benchmark applications but in short this is a processor that is definitely worth $240 because it delivers much more in terms of speed and quality than the difference in price.

Overall, Intel Core i5-4690K is fully recommended choice if you are gamer or someone who uses your computer's resources to the limit - you will not regret the money that you invested in its purchase.

This is my choice of cpu for my first build, I researched online quite a lot as I have never built a pc before so knew very little about building a computer or it's components previously. I'm certainly no expert now but I have built the pc and it works well, actually much better than I'd hoped so I'm very happy.My reviews reflect my personal thoughts and are not that of an expert.
My researching and general rooting around online found that this chip was the top end of the i5 line. My aim was to build a decent mid range pc not a high spec gaming rig so I felt that I didn't need the i7 chip. I wanted solid multitasking performance and fast processing speeds but wasn't too interested in the hyper threading technology as the four physical cores in this processor are more than sufficient for my requirements. This chip, combined with the ASUS Z97 mobo has given me a very quick, capable build for my needs. It has also allowied me to feel comfortable that should I need to add more hardware or more demanding software in the future I will be able to do so without having to consider replacing the cpu. It is unlocked (the K in the name) and this allows for overclocking which, although unlikely to be required is nice to know that should I need more power from this cpu, I can squeeze a little more out than I could had I used the locked version. The ASUS Z97 board makes this a breeze to do.
I should state that I didn't use the standard heat sink that came with it, I chose to use an Arctic Freezer 13 to give me piece of mind that overheating would not be an issue.
Although I stated my build was not intended for gaming...well, I'm not saying I've been playing games when I actually should have been working but had I done so then I would say that I haven't had any problems running them with decent settings and have had no issues whatsoever with the temperature.

OK so here we have Devil's Canyon. Not much attention was given to the i5 between the i7 hitting 4.4GHz out of the box and the £50 Pentium that overclocks.

I had the Pentium and I was a bit naive as to how far a dual core might get me in modern gaming etc (not very).

So I bought a 4690K as I don't really need Hyperthreading.

Games = fantastic. Best gaming CPU.
Performance = equally outstanding

Overclocking, OK so every CPU is different. Some peoples Pentiums got to 4.8GHz on 1.25v, mine wouldn't do 4.2ghz @ 1.35v. The same will apply to i5s, my particular sample is running @ 4.7GHz / 1.225v so VERY good for Haswell.

But it is still Haswell- so don't expect to be doing 5GHz like you used to be able to with Sandybridge.

But the temperatures are no longer an issue; with a £28 Hyper 412S I managed to get my overclock running at 60c under stress testing. Simply amazing as '1st gen' Haswell would have rocketed straight to 80c.

So it's good- but it's still Haswell so don't expect to be getting 5GHz.
