I bought this CPU because it's nearly top-end fast, but considerably cheaper than the 39xx series. However, there is a gotcha:

LGA2011 X79 motherboards were mostly released in late 2011 for the 39xx chips and didn't support the (as-then) unreleased 3820. It was only supported in BIOS upgrades during Mar-Apr 2012. You have no way of knowing what BIOS is in your mobo until you assemble a system and attempt to power it up.

Which is where the great catch-22 arises: if the motherboard doesn't support the 3820, it won't POST. So you can't flash the BIOS to support the chip. At least, not without borrowing a £600 chip from somewhere else.

Despite being on the market for several months now, this still affects ASRock, MSI and Intel boards - and probably the others.

Try and communicate with the mobo seller first if you intend to buy one of these and ask them to upgrade it to the latest BIOS before shipping: otherwise you will end up with a state-of-the-art brick like me.

Technically, my negative score is for the LGA2011 ecosystem, rather than this product; I'll update it when / if I get the system running.

Bought this recently along with an X79 motherboard. I'm not used to intel rigs at all but was immensely impressed with this. Cooling is taken care of by an Antec 620 H20 liquid loop, CPU runs cool, around 40 degrees, with a mild 4ghz overclock. The experts say this chip cannot be overclocked as wildly as some intel CPUs due to it being only partially unlocked, though some reading on the internet suggest 4.5ghz is easily achievable and that it can in this state out perform the much more expensive 6 core I7s and that even ivybridge is within its grasp.

For no more money than an i7 2700K can you go wrong?

Ultimately I am very pleased and runs my 100% gaming rig perfectly.

Recently bought this cpu with an X79 board from Amazon (they were here in 2 days so I would like to give Amazon 5 Stars for their Customer Department) and I am massively impressed. It overclocks to 5250 Mhz stable at 1.48 Volts and much lower volts for 5Ghz. From what i have read and seen so far, any of these chips can easily overclock to 4625-4750Mhz (over 1 Ghz compared to its stock speed)around 1.35~1.38 Volts. With its 8 logical cores, it can easily handle massive jobs. If you are using massive memory and graphics intense programs, it can handle anything you throw at it. In short; I am hugely impressed by the capacity and power of this chip. I also highly recommend using proper Custom Liquid Cooling setup if you are aimimg for high overclocks. Closed loop water cooling systems cant handle the heat as Volts start going over 1.425. And with the best of the best air cooling (Noctua NHD14 etc)I dont think you will be able to go past 4.5 Ghz. Just an early warning if you are thinking of buying this chip, so that you dont waste your money on coolers which you will later have to replace for a better one. A Custom Liquid Cooling setup can keep this CPU around 60~65C at ambient 23~25 while using it at around 1.45V. I hope these numbers help anyone who buys this CPU.
All in all, Excellent 5 Star product.

I'm taking this processor to the limit and it's responding quite well. Even with a bad graphics card It is still working fine. I think that rigth now it has one of the best price/speed ratio.

i would recommend to anyone
this processor is really good, fast and certainly is a massive upgrade to my pc's performance.
the cost of this item is not too bad compared to the cost of my older slower processor a few years ago so this is really a good buy .

I love this little heart and soul of my system. I have yet to find an instance where my system feels taxed for CPU resource. There's not really much more I can say other than enjoy this powerful little beauty which is perfect for a mid range system.

Rock solid performance and stability as always from Intel.

This particular CPU doesn't come with a cooler, and whether it's to save us money is questionable, but it allows you the option of choosing your own regardless. I actually found Intel's own water-cooler to be very effective and ultimately, very stylish too.
