Product Description

Product Description

Intaglio is the general name used to describe all printmkaing processes where the artist incises or engraves the surface of a plate either directly with tools or indirectly with chemicals in order to pull a print from it. Although the techniques that come under this category are labelled traditional they are also among the most popular and widely used techniques in contemporary printmaking. The direct methods include techniques such as drypoint, engraving and mezzotint and the indirect methods include etching and aquatint. In this book Mychael Barratt introduces the reader to both the direct and indirect techniques and shows examples of an international range of artists whose work will serve as an inspiration. These artists include Goya, Rembrandt, Durer, Picasso, John Heagan Eames, Paula Rego and Chris Orr.

About the Author

Mychael Barratt was born in Canada and studied printmaking at the Nova Scotia College of Art, Halifax, and Central St. Matin's, London. He exhibits widely in many countries and is a commissioned artist for Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter/Printmakers.

... but you might find you get what you need!
I bought this book without the benefit of reading the other 2 reviews, hoping for a manual that would cover in great detail the various techniques and was, initially, disappointed: although the techniques are outlined, much of the book is taken up with examples and biographies of printmakers. How glad I am not to have written a review then! Given time I have found this a goldmine of a book. The author is enthusiastic and appreciative of many different styles and the examples he gives are always interesting and often inspiring. For me, it was worth the money alone to be introduced to the lovely drypoint work of Anita Klein and Helen Fay - others will no doubt find pleasure in other artists included. Mychael Barratt clearly understands there are less prosaic ways of learning about etching than instruction alone.

Like IKEA flat pack instructions and Inland Revenue guidance notes, many books which aim to tell you how to do something are intelligible only to those who already know how to do it. This book is, emphatically, not one of those. Based on the author's acknowledged expertise and written in a clear, attractive style, it guides us through the world of etching with enthusiasm, good humour and an uncommon generosity which salts the text with the hints and trade secrets gathered in a lifetime of practice.
Good illustrations and informative profiles of prominent artists in the field broaden the book's appeal, which is fine. But its true purpose is to get you etching. Believe me, it will.

Hot off the press 29 Jan 2011
I bought this book to learn more about etching...i am an evening class printmaker and this book was fantastic for me. Its very well written, with plenty of photos of technical stuff and artworks. I have learnt alot from it and have since tried out many of the processes and would therefore recommend this book to printmakers of all levels aswell as print collectors who wish to learn more about the medium.
