This CD sets out a cornucopia of Mediaeval Music in a demonstration of each of the most commonly used instruments of the times. It is non-pedantic, it is user-friendly, and thoroughly entertaining.
It is also uplifting, thrilling, and is the nearest thing to a time machine (which is what I want most in the world - just for brief visits, not for a lifetime, - all that toothache, Cholera and Plague!)
You can be transported to the Era if you sit back and half-close your eyes ....
I wish David Munrow had not died so tragically young.

I have had the LP of this for about thirty years and decided it was about time I replaced it for a cd copy, being one of my favourite early music recordings. Yes, I still nave some classical lps (about 400!), but due to overall cost to replace them with cd copies and lack of space, I can't see me replacing all of them. However, with the original recording of this one, there was a 100-page booklet explaining the different instruments and how they were played. This is a very useful reference work to have with the recording so I will not be tossing this set as I have done with many other lps that I have replaced. I give this one top marks! I just love the music of this period and used to belong to a group that researched, performed and held music schools for those interested in this genre. Unfortunately, this group folded in 1987.

I have had a copy of this on vinyl for many years and recently decided to get the CD version. It is an excellent transfer of a superb recording. Sadly, David Munrow was lost to us at an early age but his pioneering work with original instruments has proved an inspiration to musicians world-wide. Also, to people like me who are interested in early music for theatrical purposes, these discs are an invaluable authentic source.

I had this on vinyl many years ago, in fact it was my first one on early music after enjoying the BBC serial "The Six Wives of Henry the Eighth". I was hooked, I purchased and enjoyed more early music records by different performers. I was so saddened by David Munrow's early death as he was such a genius. Now that my record player have gone and had to give away my collection I have CDs and was so chuffed to beable to find this again. I recommend this to listen to as a first introduction to early music instruments.

Ah yes - I begin by apologising for the title of this review, but it encapsulates the sheer enthusiasm of this two CD set. When David Munrow started to broadcast, I moved heaven and earth to glue myself to Radio 3 (or was it the Third Programme then?) to hear his programmes, which changed the way I 'heard' music in general and introduced me to early music and 'authentic' performance as well. Along with the director of music at my school, the mighty Bill Snowden FRCO (practised only 15 minutes for Reubke 94th Psalm!) Munrow was one of the definitive influences of my musical education. I bought the LP version of this set when it came out and - wouldn't you believe it? - the accompanying 90+ page huge booklet (which I had retained) was one of the sacrifices I made when I downsized a few years ago. Yes, performance style has moved on since Munrow's day, but these CDs still package a fabulous summary of what instruments of the time sounded like. After listening to this you can talk with confidence in the pub about racketts, sackbuts and the like. For me, then, this set is a mixture of a nostalgic purchase, a valuable point of reference, and a source of entertainment. I just wish that a legal source would issue a PDF of the original booklet reformatted in A4 so I could print it and share it.

I bought this item in the early seventies, but on lp. Toghether with amazing book. As the quality of those lp's became bad, I bought now this fantastic music on cd, and ofcourse I kept the old book. I hve learned quite a lot now about old instruments, for me the beginning of looking after other recordings on period instruments.
