Unbearably awful! 10 Jan. 2013

The Good: A great selection of 15 songs.

The Bad: Where do I begin? I cannot believe anyone would even waste their time recording such horrendous noise! The cover shows a guy playing a guitar. There is no guitar to be heard on any track I had the stomach to listen to. A cheap synthesizer was used to produce a nightmarish imitation of a guitar sound.

The accompaniment "music" on one channel is a fraction as loud as the guiding melody obnoxiously being blasted on the other channel. The balance is so bad it is impossible to tell if there is supposed to be percussion or bass or some other instrumental accompaniment.

If anyone is so deaf (or medicated) as to make it past those problems, they would certainly be stopped by the mechanical, expressionless pounding of the notes. Perhaps they weren't even played on a keyboard. The notes were more likely entered into a computer then played through its internal synthesizer.

There is absolutely no redeeming quality to the backup CD whatsoever. I previously purchased "Ballads - Play Along Solos for Alto Sax" also published by Hal Leonard. While many tracks were mediocre, a couple tracks were quite good. All of them could at least be listened to. "Acoustic Rock" is so bad I would be hard pressed to purchase another Hal Leonard publication.

As hard as I've tried to describe how terrible this is - its worse. Do not waste your money. If anything, Hal Leonard should have to pay handsomely for anyone to listen to it. Giving it only 1 star is being far too generous.

Update - I just purchased a superb example of what a play along book should be: "Elton John Playalong for Alto Saxophone". It is part of a "Guest Spot" series by Wise Publications. It's the complete opposite of the Hal Leonard book. One isn't required to mute 1 track to silence the melody. Instead, 2 CDs are included: 1 with just the accompaniment, the other a complete demo. The background music is outstanding with a very full, professional, well balanced sound. Excellent.
