Book Description

29 Oct 2012 Home Front Detective Series
1916. Inspector Marmion and Sergeant Keedy are assigned to the case when the body of a young conscientious objector is found bludgeoned to death. Public sympathy is lukewarm for conscientious objectors with some people even claim that a conchie deserves to die if he won t fight for his King and Country. As the detectives identify one suspect, others pop up in the most unexpected places. Everyone speaks well of Ablatt but is he really the saint they describe? Marmion and Keedy have to dig deep in order to unearth the instrument of slaughter and the person who wielded it. Marston has legions of fans for his Railway Detective series, among others, and they are sure to find the rich historical period of WW1 London very much to their taste.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Dig This 29 Oct 2012
Format:Hardcover
This second outing of Scotland Yard detectives Inspector Marmion and Sergeant Keedy develops the promise of their first caper in Bespoke Murder,as they are assigned to the case of the murder of Cyril Ablatt, leader of Shoreditch group of conscientious objectors.Once again we have a host of suspicious characters, all who have strong motives for the killing of Cyril and had me guessing right up to the last chapter of this well constructed who done it.Edward Marston likes to develop the family life of our detectives as well as build a portrait of the victim and the suspects, as the hunt for the murderer intensify. The Home Front Detective Series is starting to grow into a good companion of the Railway Detective and i for one can not wait for the next outing of both and have me reading late into the night.

Edward Marston is a master of the historical novel. His stories of the victorian railways make excellent reading. I did not find the same enjoyment with this novel. The storyline lacked a little conviction and was at times a little obvious. The last novel of Marston that I read (The Stationmasters Farewell) was an excellent example of the historical genre. Instrument of Slaughter did not compare.

4.0 out of 5 stars New detectives, a breath of fresh air 8 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I like the Railway Detective books very much, but they are getting a bit 'samey', so I decided to try the Home Front. The plotting was sound as was the historical detail and I like both lead characters very much. More please, and soon.

Enjoyed the read but something was missing after reading the 'Railway Detective' series of books. I enjoyed those more than the home detective books!

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Read 11 Feb 2013

This is yet another of Edward Marston's easy read books. This time based during the first world war in London and about the Home Front. Once again Inspector Marmion and Sergeant Keedy are on the trail of somebody responsible for killing a young voiciferous Concientious Objector. During the investigation to duo find that Cyril Ablatt (the victim) seems, apart from his beliefs on war, quite a fine upstanding pillar of society. Obiously when the Conscription act became law peoples feelings and opinions to him and his frieneds who also are concientious objectors changed.

Here we have plenty of suspects with a little bit of romance thrown in for good measure.

Very easy and exciting read.
