4.0 out of 5 stars Helped me write better, and that's not easy!, 31 July 2010
This review is from: Instructor's Manual for Mcgraw-Hill Reader (Paperback)
I didn't do well in English as a freshman, and I dreaded having to take my FOURTH semester of REQUIRED English: yea, that's how many my school requires. Luckily I got this book and it made understanding the subtle details of complex writing a lot easier. Before I used to sort of slink in my seat when the professor asked questions. I started feeling a lot more confident once I figured out what sophisticated writing is all about, and actually would raise my hand to answer difficult assignments.

4.0 out of 5 stars Now I know what my English professors know, 12 Aug 2009
By JackOfMostTrades "Jack" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Instructor's Manual for Mcgraw-Hill Reader (Paperback)
My English professors always act like us students are a bit slow-witted because we don't 'get' what the focus of classical essays are like Plato's 'The Allegory of the Cave' or 'The Moth' by V. Woolf. Well, now I figured out there's a language these professors speak, and all it takes is to learn the code and you can pretty much understand what they are getting at. You also learn what the essays are getting at, which is very helpful. I don't know why they just don't make books like these more available. They are great learning tools and help you understand your professors are smarter than you. They've just read a lot more.

4.0 out of 5 stars I finally learned how to teach essays to students, 7 Aug 2009
By Bill on Books "Bill on Books" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Instructor's Manual for Mcgraw-Hill Reader (Paperback)
I've taught college English for about five years, and it definitely wasn't what I thought it would be. The basic problem I found was simply how to teach and what's worth teaching! I think I know what I'm doing now and this guidebook deintely helped. That may sound odd, but not every student in the world is a humanities major--in fact, there doesn't seem to be any humanities majors when I take informal polls, at least at my school. This book offers lots of teaching strategies that actually gets students heated up and engaged about what they're reading, and some of them have actually found writing to be fun. Huh? Well, I didn't believe it either. But this book charts the way regarding what is worth teaching. It presents classic and contemporary essays in a new light: focusing on the reason people write, how they develop writing skills, and why writing can be important. Now I find that students don't feel overwhelmed when they read Virginia Woolf or Stephen Jay Gould, for that matter. One of the best features are strategies on imitation, which is a great way for students to get into the heads of people who have mastered English prose. Students used to think many authors are from different planets than they. With the guidelines in this book, I've been able to show them writers and thinkers are people who mastered a craft simply from living on planet Earth.
