In Detail

Video games have come a long way in the past 30 years; from classic consoles and arcade games to modern adventure games. Now you can recreate those experiences on the easily-configurable and efficient $35 Raspberry Pi Linux computer.

Instant Raspberry Pi Gaming will show you how to install, set up, and run various classic consoles, arcade systems, and modern adventure games on your Raspberry Pi device.

With Instant Raspberry Pi Gaming, you will start by configuring your SD card and selecting the games you wish to install before learning how to keep your machine up-to-date and running smoothly. You will learn how to install and play MAME, SNES, Atari 2600, and PlayStation emulators. You will also look at the different one-step installers available to make your gaming life easier. After that, you will play in the Open Arena, based on Quake 3, and then you can relax in the 3D sandbox of Minecraft. You will also learn how to find more games to install from the Raspberry Pi app store.

Filled with practical, step-by-step instructions and clear explanations for the most important and useful tasks. A simple how-to book with recipes laid out in an easy-to-follow, step-by-step manner that will have you gaming in no time!

I bought the kindle version of this book to help me with installing various emulators. So far i have only got as far as installing the PiMAME emulator. I was hoping that the book would give me some good advice regarding where to find ROM's and troubleshooting however all it does is reiterate the quick start guide on the PiMAME website [...] which is available for free. I have had a quick look through the rest of the book and it appears all of the information can be gathered for free by doing a simple google search. This makes this book completely redundant and i would advise against purchasing it.

2.0 out of 5 stars It's a bit too instant 16 Jan 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Bought this as a present. From the description I thought that there would be some instructions on how to program games but on a quick flick through all I could see was downloading programs from websites. I'm a retired software engineer and thought it would encourage my teenage nephew to do some real programming instead of just playing on his XBox. At least it might encourage him to switch on the Raspberry Pi. Bought the Haynes Rasperry Pi Manual instead - far more interesting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful Installation Guide 10 Nov 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Caveat - I was given a copy of this ebook to review.
This book is a step by step userguide for installing various pieces of gaming software for your Raspberry Pi, from starting with a blank SD card, all the way to running multiple pieces of gaming software through a simple menu system.
I would recommend this for anyone wanting to play games on their Pi, as even with no previous technical knowledge it's so simple to get things up and running easily.

1.0 out of 5 stars Way too simplistic 1 Feb 2014
By Benjamin Kaslon - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Too simplistic. Some of the explanations were: go to the store and download it. Well, what happens if it is taken off the store? It offers no help on what to do in that situation. I stopped reading after that point.

3.0 out of 5 stars user controls??? 18 Oct 2013

I was hoping to see more about arcade control setup instead of just setup guides for different software. It was informative but just left me in the same boat before I had purchased the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beginner's Guide 22 Nov 2013
By brooks - Published on
As a complete beginner to Raspberry Pi, this book was excellent. The easy to follow, step-by-step recipes provided setup guides for different software (MAME, SNES, Atari 2600, PlayStation emulators). After installing the emulators, there were simple maintenance instructions for keeping everything up-to-date and I was playing in no time.

Additionally, the Raspberry Pi App Store had additional games to choose from to extend my gaming experience.

If you’re comfortable with basic command line functions and can format your own SD card, you’ll be good to go with the recipes in this book.
