Product Description

Product Description

The second edition of Instant Notes in Bioinformatics introduced the readers to the themes and terminology of bioinformatics. It is divided into three parts: the first being an introduction to bioinformatics in biology; the second covering the physical, mathematical, statistical and computational basis of bioinformatics, using biological examples wherever possible; the third describing applications, giving specific detail and including data standards. The applications covered are sequence analysis and annotation, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolite study, supramolecular organization, systems biology and the integration of-omic data, physiology, image analysis, and text analysis.

--This text refers to the Paperback edition.

From the Back Cover

Instant Notes in Bioinformatics describes what is possible, and the strengths, limitations and potential pitfalls of methods and analyses. The book begins by describing data generation and databases. Following this it takes us to the newer bioinformatics problems associated with structures, expression, proteomics, interactions and pathways. The important areas in bioinformatics are covered to encourage easy learning and revision. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Simple but not naive 28 Jan 2004
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
The authors of this book keep their promises. Their aim was to provide readers with the basic knowledge of this vast field called Bioinformatics and they should be satisfied; they achieved it. It is really amazing how the authors managed to fill so much information in 270 pages. It may seem easy to read, but in fact a careful reading is required in order to assure that all the information will be receipted. It may not be as "scientific" as some hard-core bioinformaticians may wanted, but after all it is a student-oriented book (mainly for undergraduates). Recommended for those who want to learn quickly and efficiently Bioinformatics. However, for those who want something more, this book is only the beginning...

An evolving subject 9 April 2010
By Ol'Jee
Format:Paperback
The subject of bioinformatics is huge and is continually evolving and expanding. What this book does is try to pull together several concepts in a light easily readable context. I've been looking through it for a few weeks now and it is by no means a book that will introduce you to the concept of bioinformatics, it seems to be more of a book that will be useful to those working in the field for a while that need to catch up with recent developments in the wider scope of things.

It would seem to me, as someone relatively new to bioinformatics, that most bioinformaticians work within a very specialized area, this book would do a good job in widening the scope of knowledge of these people. It may also be a good book to help final year students pull together concepts learned on their courses. As with other "Instant Notes" series books, the chapter summaries are absolutely fantastic - and the links to related chapters and linking concepts are as good as you are going to get without using HTML. Overall I would say its a book worth having if you work in the field...but keep your senses alert because things are happening so fast!
