If there is one book on Qi Gong, or one investment that you make in your personal wellness program, then this surely is it. The layout is superb - beautiful photos, with well thought out text making the feel of the book rather like the practice of Qi Gong: spacious.
And the lack of clutter means the book cuts through to the essence of practicing Qi Gong.
Meanwhile the explanation of the forms (the movements of Qi Gong) are very clear, as are the details and importance of warming up. A book to refer back to time and time again, whether you be a beginner, or a more advanced practitioner.
In all, this book is a treasure, like the 8 treasures taught within it. And as a martial artist and person who has suffered a crippling body disorder, i thoroughly recommend both Qi Gong, this book, and the teacher to everyone - as i have, and continue to benefit, immensely.

As other reviewers have stated, this is a superb book, extremely well put together. I usually detest exercise - I get bored easily, especially doing the same thing regularly - but Qi Gong and Kung Fu are easy (and interesting) to learn, are both fun and relaxing, adaptable, and require no equipment or special environment. It is hard to get bored or put off with these exercises, especially as they can be done nearly anywhere, at any time.

If you do not have access to a suitable class and/or teacher (ideally Yan Lei himself), it may be difficult to be sure you are following the exercises in this book correctly. For one thing, the speed at which you can do some of the movements is not always clear, and you might not be confident in combining the Eight Treasures form.

I suggest that you buy BOTH the 'Shaolin Warrior - The Way Of Qi Gong [DVD]' and 'Shaolin Workout - Shaolin Warrior Vol.1 - Beginners [DVD]' DVDs to get a complete picture and gain confidence in performing all the stretches, warm ups and forms in this book. Even if you are not interested in the vigorous workout of 'Shaolin Workout - Shaolin Warrior Vol.1 - Beginners [DVD]', there are stances, stretches and forms that are not on the 'Shaolin Warrior - The Way Of Qi Gong [DVD]' DVD, and it would be worth having just to learn more about the correct way to move and breathe.

Even if you have martial arts or previous Qi Gong experience, I suggest the DVDs will still help to focus on learning Shaolin Qi Gong correctly and confidently.

This book is not just a step-by-step guide, but is also a training reference manual; after following the book from beginning to end, you can dip in and out, adjusting the stances and forms to your own individual needs.

I also suggest (if you can afford it as well as the DVDs!) getting Shifu Shi Yan Ming's 'The Shaolin Workout: 28 Days to Transforming Your Body, Mind and Spirit with Kung Fu', which not only provides an alternative method of Shaolin fitness and training, but also complements this book with different pictures, attitude and approach. Many of the Qi Gong stances and exercises in Yan Lei's book are also found integrated into Shi Yan Ming's workout, although sometimes in a slightly modified version.

I thoroughly recommend this book and the DVDs to anyone wanting to get fit or stay fit, regardless of martial arts or exercise experience. The exercises can be adapted to any fitness level or health condition (although, of course, you may need the advice of a health professional). If followed correctly and with commitment, the forms, stretches and stances can give recognisable benefits within a few days - breathing a little easier, feeling more confident in your body, moving a little easier, and so on.

By far the best exercise program and book I have come across (after years of searching, on and off); it is also the most encouraging and believable. Lastly, the exercises integrate spirituality without any religious overtones; you do not need to be a Buddhist or even be particularly interested in Buddhism in order to get the most from this book.

The presentaion and photos in this book are beautiful and amazing. Yan Lei is an inspiration in himself and this book will send you in the right direction for practicing this art. I do these excercises everyday from his DVD Qi Gong vol 1 and can say they are most beneficial.
