First you'll have to clear your desk and spend a few hours inputting every piece of information about company bank accounts, customers, pricing, VAT, employees, pension contributions... the lot. It's boring but necessary (and is aided by idiot-proof setup wizards). And now, with a few hours input from you each week, Instant Financial Suite 10 takes over.
The Accounts side gives you access to sales and purchase ledgers and to the bank and cash book; customer and supplier records let you track and chase bad payers--you can generate VAT returns and make e-payments to participating banks, and the task manager keeps you on track with lists and alerts of jobs to do; the software generates invoices and financial stationery. Credit control lets you swiftly chase late payers (and find out what you owe). And the Accounts Analyser (new to version 10) gives an instant snapshot of your business's health without running any reports. Compare the business onscreen, with year-on-year comparisons for example, to help you make better decisions.
Meanwhile, the Payroll side will do all the maths for Income Tax, National Insurance, sickness and maternity pay, student loans and so on. Come payday, the software is admirably flexible, allowing you to generate weekly, fortnightly, four-weekly or monthly payslips (or a mixture). You'll find it supports all the major pension schemes including the Stakeholder pension. And you can build a bank of management information on your staff, with the software supplying current and historical personnel details. It will generate P14/60, P11, P32 and P35 forms and keep you on the right side of the law. You can submit returns direct from the software via the Internet and, come the year end, it will walk you through the step-by-step year-end return.

Hidden costs,

The Instant Accounts side of this package is hidiously cumbersome and complicated, it is very difficult to correct mistakes and the whole thing is very very frustrating to the non-professional, it certainly does not save time. The payroll side of this package is just as complicated but worst of all is the hidden cost of the yearly upgrades at £99 to keep the package working, you will note there is no mention of this in the advertising. Maybe Sage should have a rethink about their upgrade price and simplify their products jargon.

I am a Chartered Accountant and purchased Instant Financial Suite to run the finances of my consultancy business. It operates extremely simply and functionally but will only suit the smallest of businesses. If you need stock control you will need Line 50. VAT is handled extremely well but unless you known what you are doing read the manuals thoroughly before making entries as some things as handled differently from other software I have operated. Month end is a pain in my opinion but gets easier when you have done it a few times.Payroll is superb and straight forward. It will only operate a twelve month accounting period. If you need something more functional and with Stock Control then you would be better investing in Line 50. In Summary - only for the smallest and simplest of businesses with turnover under £ 100,000 and nothing complex - i.e. manufacturing or wholesale/retail.
