Book Description

1 Oct 2008
Covers updates to the standard in 2004 and 2008. The Official guide to BS 5839 from BSI British Standards. This is the essential guide to BS 5839-1:2002, as amended in December 2004 and April 2008. This code of practice, which as one of the BS 5839 suite of codes and standards bears the generic heading Fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings, is entitled Code of practice for system design, installation, commissioning and maintenance and as such represents the universal bible for those involved in the design, installation, commissioning, maintenance and use of fire detection and alarm systems in the United Kingdom. Compliance with the code is very commonly required by building control authorities, fire and rescue authorities and others who may enforce provisions for fire safety in certain occupancies; property insurers who may require automatic fire detection systems to comply with the recommendations of the Code and consulting engineers who commonly demand compliance with the code, often as part of the electrical specification for a building.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fire Alarm Systems 20 Jan 2009
Format:Paperback
This is by far, one of the best Technical Guides to any British Standard within building services engineering, I have read.

The aim of the book is to provide guidance on the current version of BS5839-1. Laid out in 36 chapters over some 300 pages, it covers the history of BS5839 through to User Responsibilities.

Some chapters are only two or three pages long, but pack the punchiest of detail. An easy to read format, it discusses the client initial enquiry to the developer and his role, the consultant's or contractor's design requirements and responsibilites, installation and commissioning requirements, documentation for the O&M manuals, clarifies what, when and why verification is required, certification and the term, deviations to the Code, through to acceptance by the user and their responsibilites in terms of maintaing the system.

Having installed FA systems as an electrician, commissioned them as an FA technician, and designed FA systems as an Electrical Engineer, I can say this book covers all the usual and not so usual issues that heve to to be addressed (pun intended) during the life cycle of a building.

To summarise, the author makes it quite clear in the Introduction, the guide should not be regarded as offering any final authorative interpretation of the code. This is true. If however you are a specifier, installer, commissioning engineer, an end user, or any one else who has to refer to BS 5839, then you should read this book, and then keep it in your library alongside BS 5839-1. In fact is should be made Law!

This book is extremely useful and has helped massively in writing specifications and documetation for fire alarm systems. It guides you in the requirements and ensures that your system is as safe as reasonably possible. A very good book

3.0 out of 5 stars Poor presentation 23 April 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The author has apparently drafted the regulations. Therefore, I am not commenting about the contents - I couldn' understand much. My comments pertain only to the poor presentation.I don't see any effort by the author to communicate with the reader. It looks like a straight cut and paste from the manual.
