This book encapsulates Jonathan's magnetism and inspiration. It is his life story and what has shaped the leadership values and principles he clearly displays and develops in others. I particularly enjoyed the realness of the narrative, the constructive influence of army experiences applied to the business world and the structure and theory surrounding the compass model. There is some real learning in the book and you are left with a warm, feel-good factor.

Inspiring LEADERSHIP-Jonathan Perks MBE
This book is built around the authors own personal journey through life. A very successful life in terms of personal achievement and success. This is not a `rags to riches' story, this is a success story built around strong values, beliefs and hard work, in fact blood sweat and tears might be a better description. At the start it sets out a clear structure of where this journey is going with a `compass' with eight beadings or guiding principles by which his life is lived. The title suggests it is about Leadership, the content (for me) is far more, and it is indeed leadership plus life skills plus a roadmap for coaching. It starts pretty much with the authors `career' in the British Army and takes us on a journey of experiences, lessons, learning from the wise and from the mistakes of the not so wise and its transition's from the army to a very successful entrepreneur in the Senior executive coaching business. It contrasts the need for strong leadership in the traditional senses of being tough and having the ability to make decisive decisions under extreme pressure to having the `softer' skills of emotional intelligences, actions and decisions based on values and beliefs coupled with compassion. It ends each section with questions for the reader to consider for them selves which are a valuable guide for us soon to be coaches.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful By Andrew Thompson on 15 Nov. 2011
Format: Paperback
The hard learned lessons of this book were brought to vivid reality when I was lucky enough to experience Jonathan's leadership coaching for myself. The framework presented in the book also offers a systematic model for reviewing your personal impact as a leader on the world around you and for exploring the assumptions that might be limiting your impact. When combined with Jonathan's insightful coaching, you can discover limiting beliefs about yourself and the world that you did not even suspect existed. Once removed, with Jonathan's guidance and support, first my outlook transformed and then the opportunities for putting the lessons to good use just rushed in.

This is the best book I have read in the last 15 years. Do yourself a favour and get it, read it and keep it on the first space on your bookshelf. Pick it up regularly and remind yourself of its invaluable messages for successful and inspirational leadership.
Inspiration is critical to bringing all teams and to life; and is the bedrock of all successful individuals and every successful business. Jonathan shows that it is something that we can all do and also he shows us how to do it and to create your own inspirational style that works for you.
This book is essential reading for all executive leaders and come to think of it all aspirational leaders.
The Inspiring Leadership Model consists of 8 clear principles. The Compass framework Jonathan shares to sum up and explain the 8 key principles of leadership is invaluable. It can help you create your own inspirational leadership style. As a model it is both powerful and simple. The Compass framework is something that I shall use a tool to underpin and develop my own style of leadership and something that I shall be keep referring to and relying upon as I go. It is also an easy way to remember and remind oneself of the 8 key principles of inspirational leadership, this is what made it such a great book for me.
Jonathans own candid life stories and lessons learned the hard way are a wonderful insight into how these principles and framework for leadership have evolved. They also provide practical relevance that we can all relate to and use in our own leadership journey.
Bravo Jonathan, I am very pleased to have come across your great book. I look forward to further releases of your inspirational leadership works. Many thanks to you!

Format: Paperback
Jonathan gives us a new and exciting leadership model that is exactly what we need as 21st century is unfolding. He offers a unique combination of the leadership compass concept along with illustrative examples drawn from his own and others' experiences in the military and business. I read `Inspiring Leadership' from my perspective as Principal of The Mount School. Leading any organisation is a complex and demanding role and I feel enormously privileged to be in education where teachers have a vital part to play in preparing the next generation of children to take up the challenges that lie before them.
Leadership is a set of skills that can be developed if leaders hold their position to make a difference. Jonathan's book provides a clear set of principles within the compass model that enable leaders to begin to tangibly make a difference to their organisation. The difference with Jonathan's compass model is that it is embedded in a very human approach. It is one that considers both how a leader can inspire those around them as well as how their actions impact on everyone in the organisation. Results and outcomes are important but that in order to be a successful leader you have to appreciate "other people's finest qualities" as Jonathan says.
Inspiring Leadership has resonance for all leaders and it has certainly enabled me to aim to ensure that my leadership creates a positive impact and add value every day to the whole school community. It is essential reading for all leaders, no matter what kind of organisation they serve.
