DVD Description

The Inspector Morse – Series 1 DVD contains all episodes from the opening series of this very popular and long-standing show. First broadcast in 1987, the Inspector Morse series is a cops and crime drama based on the Colin Dexter novels of the same name. The show is based around the exciting exploits of Morse (John Thaw)--a senior officer within the Criminal Investigation Department of the Oxford Police--as he investigates heavy crimes in and around Oxford with his sidekick, Inspector Lewis (Kevin Whately). Morse is a grumpy classical music aficionado who loves beer, and who frequently loses patience with the earnest but somewhat slow Lewis.

The original series 8 July 2007
By D. Evans VINE™ VOICE
John Thaw had to be persuaded to take on the role for which he is best remembered. Having already played Detective Regan in the classic seventies series, The Sweeney, Thaw was reluctant to take on the role of another Police Officer. Thaw was persuaded that Morse would be a very different kind of character to Regan, one more likely to his intellect to solve a problem than his fists. This character was an intellectual former Oxford student, with a love of classical music, beer, The Archers and solving a puzzle. He also knew he was intellectualy superior to his colleagues and was prone to treating people in a partrosining manner, most notably his long suffering Sergeant, Robbie Lewis. Jack Regan would have run a mile from such a character.
In January 1987, Central televsion broadcast the very Morse episode, The Dead Of Jericho. The episode was 2 hours long, a format which was unique in television drama at this time. The episode was carefully plotted, featuring a variety of twists before the murderer was uncovered. All the 3 adaptions that make up the first Morse series are based on novels by the character's creator, former Oxford lecturer, Colin Dexter. Joining John Thaw was Kevin Whateley, as the young Newcastle born sergeant Lewis. In the early novels, Lewis is described as an elderly Welshman. The producers rightly decided to cast a younger man in this role, thereby developing a contrast between the characters. All 3 episodes are excellent.

Great crime drama 22 Dec 2011

Inspector Morse is probably one of the most successful shows in ITV's history and for a reason. Although the three feature length episodes that make up series 1 are nowhere near as good as the show managed in it's prime, they are above average with decent scripts and great acting throughout. John Thaw is legendary as the title character and it can be said that without this show we wouldn't have got similar feature length detective dramas such as A Touch of Frost. The first series eases you into the show with good character development in a short space of time. A lot can be siad for intelligent scripting. 3.5/5

Morse is a great series, and the relationship between the characters are fantastic, even from the first episode. The problem is the quality of the DVD`s. You would think that the BBC would have remastered the episodes for DVD`s, but no, very grainy and poor visually. A shame.
