Product Description

Inspector Morse's name is as inextricably linked with Oxford as it is with the Times crossword. The pubs, churches, university colleges, stately homes, hotels and countryside in and around the city form a real-life backdrop to Morse's investigations in Colin Dexter's 13 novels. This illustrated guide to the places in which Morse lived and worked is full of facts and trivia for Morse addicts, whether you're an armchair fan or you're visiting Oxford and wish to follow in the irascible detective's footsteps.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Complete Guide to Inspector Morse?, 11 Dec 2002

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Inspector Morse Country: An Illustrated Guide to the World of Oxford's Famous Detective (Hardcover)
In 'Inspector Morse Country' Colin Goodwin has produced a beautifully illustrated guide to the environs of Oxford as inhabited by Inspector Morse (and, of course, Sergeant Lewis). In 216 pages, the locations in Colin Dexter's unrivalled novels are explored and often accompanied by photography of the highest order.

The book's strengths lie in its ability to take the reader in their mind's eye to the Colleges, streets and countryside of Oxfords, not forgetting the pubs! Indeed, I think that Endeavour, himself, would have appreciated the informative prose which cross refers to the books and programmes with frequent quotations in an illustrative manner. Goodwin does the job completely and visitor information is included too together with a 'Morse Compendium' (an exhaustive list of books, TV films, radio plays etc.)

If I have any reservations about this book at all it would be that the feeling of being on Morse's shoulder (the result of Dexter's craftsmanship) is missing. Reading the book gave me the same feeling that I had when I recently visited The Trout Inn at Wolvercote (now a refurbished modern dining inn, rather losing its way as Morse's favourite thinking pub) - something's missing! Difficult to put your finger on, but definitely missing - as much as a last unfinished clue in Morse's daily crossword, something else which we are not used to.

On further reflection, I suspect that this is due to the quality of the original texts and broadcasts that were constructed with the quality of a Swiss watch. But, on the whole, if you have a deep interest in the geographical mechanics of Morse and Oxford itself or you are looking for a complete guide to the locations, then this is an interesting read and it should add to your enjoyment of the originals..

4.0 out of 5 stars Draws the reader in, 7 Sep 2010
This review is from: Inspector Morse Country: An Illustrated Guide to the World of Oxford's Famous Detective (Hardcover)
Strange to say, but I have have not seen any of the Morse TV episodes, nor read any of the Morse books, but I bought this book mainly for the information on the locations used for filming. I have seen some of the Oxfordshire locations in other films and I wanted to know more but on reading this book I found myself being drawn further and further into Morse's world.

The book could be looked on as a history book of overlapping layers. There is the history of Morse himself but also the history of the sites used in the books and on TV. The locations are described and also how Morse becomes a character in those locations. The reader finds himself actually picturing Morse drinking his beer in the pub or walking along Oxford'd streets. I now find myself considering buying the Morse TV episodes and that is probably the best compliment to give this book.
