This excellent work both of creation and translation, is a stand out novel of this genre. Starting from an unsolved, brutal murder the author takes us deep into Japanese society at every level. Acutely observed and refreshingly well written this novel evokes a world at once foreign and familiar to Western readers. The protagonist is a creation of vivid reality who is a product of his society and an observer in the mode of a Camus hero. This police procedural is highly recommended to lovers of this style and anyone who enjoys a well written novel.

Solid and memorable 18 Oct 2008

Published originally in 1961, this is a book that is reminiscent of its time (there's a technological twist and a highbrow cast of potential villains). It has stood up well, though, and makes for a substantial and satisfying read (like many Japanese novels, if you took out the details of the meals eaten by the main character it would be 30 pages slimmer!). There are no great surprises and no heroics - just absorbingly dogged police work by an otherwise domesticated soul leading to a mildly moralised conclusion. A treat for Japanophiles.

Imanishi is a likeable and believable character. Japan through his eyes is an unforgettable experience. Rich in tradition and history, a complex and political whodunnit. A must for anyone who likes Japanese literature - this is much more than a simple detective novel. Very sad I can't find more of Imanishi in English.
