Product Description

Review

Utterly loveable...Ghote is one of the great creations of detective fiction (Alexander McCall Smith )

Product Description

In a small, provincial town in the heart of India, a politician's wife has done her husband's career a great service, by dying under suspicious circumstances. That the corpse and the trail have been cold for fifteen years hasn't saved Inspector Ghote of the Bombay CID from being sent to investigate. But what chance does he have when his chief suspect is so powerful, when the whole district is against him, and when a holy man is fasting to the death to protest his prying?

But still the good inspector dutifully goes, carrying just the honour of his police force and a box of double-sized eggs . . .

This is the second of the Inspector Ghote stories I've read, and was not disappointed. The books are so well written that the reader is unaware of the writing, but is simply transported into Inspector Ghote's world. The description of the police station under siege has the tension build, but in the midst of this and despite it, Inspector Ghote continues to strive, even when the situation is hopeless, and he knows he is doomed to failure, he continues; not in hope, but because it is his duty, and more than just his duty, he continues because he owes it to justice and to the helpless seething masses to simply do his very best.

And that is why I love Inspector Ghote, he has taken this jaded 54 year old and filled him with the anger of a 20 year old, burning at the injustice of the world and those who would manipulate, threaten and steal, trampling over the bodies of the weak and poor in their attempt to fill their pockets. Thank you inspector.

Buy and read this book, you will feel better for it.

GREAT INDIAN MYSTERY 2 Dec 2003
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
A friend loaned me this book at work because he knew I enjoyed historical fiction. Altho this is a fictional mystery, it is written with such delicate and accurate description of character and setting, that I was transported to rural India with Ghote as he faced what seemed impossible to solve. And it is funny, but in a dry british way. When the book was over, I had a crush on inspector ghote, and was very happy to see there are other books in the series. There are linguistic and cultural references that make the story very authentic and ring true for anyone who has spent time in India.

Inspector Ghote breaks an egg 2 April 2008

An interesting British author. His stories are slow in developing but mesmerizing as he tells the eccentricities of Indian culture while solving a mystery.
