Product Description

Product Description

Announcing a new book from Apress and the OakTable Network:Oracle Insights: Tales of the Oak Table presents eleven world-renowned industry specialists proffering their own highly experienced views, input, and insights on Oracle--where it's been, where it's going, how (and how not) to use it successfully, the software and techniques that they've introduced to help people achieve their goals, and some frightening tales of what can happen when fundamental design principles are ignored. The collaborating authors have solved many of the worst Oracle performance problems in the world, and they've each saved at least one doomed flagship project. Over many years they've been sharing their unique knowledge with each other at conferences, around the OakTable, and in coffee shops, restaurants, and bars on five continents. Now they want to share their key insights with you. A major focus of this book concerns the ways in which you can avoid common and debilitating mistakes when building Oracle software projects. From these stories, you'll learn the simple steps that will help you avoid real pain on your next (or current) Oracle project. For more insights about this book, and a nice summary of reviews, please visit author Jonathan Lewis's website.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book on Oracle so far, 27 Jun 2005

This book may not cover tons of Oracle detail, but it has very human side, rarely seen in any technical book, let alone the rather dry topic of database design. If you only ever buy one Oracle design book, make it this one, you will not be disappointed, absolutely superb. The top Oracle "scientists" give their honest and often brutal opinon on some of the major design mistakes that Oracle database designers have made, when they don't fully understand how to use the database. The highlights must be the single table application "Vision" and probably the best beginners guide to tuning with the wait interface available at the moment. I have actually read the book cover to cover, twice now, looking forwad to readin it again!

1.0 out of 5 stars A rehash of the Oracle manuals, 25 Jul 2004
Very disappointing. Waited a long time and it's just a rehash of the Oracle manuals which you can get online.
