Book Description

4 Nov 2008 Insight Guides
Insight is proud to introduce this brand new title covering the world's most ancient and historic route. Following the famous trail from East to West, across three main regions: Western China, Central Asia and Western Asia, this guide expertly explores everything from the Buddhist caves of Dunhuang to the Terracotta Warriors of Xi'an. A total of thirteen countries are explored altogether, including Syria, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, China, Turkey, Egypt, Pakistan and Mongolia. Local writers give a rare insight into the culture, arts and people that belong to each destination, alongside over four hundred incredible full-colour photographs that bring the Silk Road to life. In-depth History and Features sections look at the evolution of trade across 5,000 miles of territory and 5,000 years of human development, the transfer of ideas, religions and philosophies, as well as inventions and technological advances. Practical travel tips are also included to help with planning and as a useful reference along the way. The unique combination of insightful exploration alongside practical advice means that this guide truly is a pleasure to read before, during and after your trip. With this guide you also receive a FREE HotelClub loyalty card, offering GBP15 off your first hotel booking plus great savings of up to 60% on over 30,000 hotels across 120 countries.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Silk Road 23 Feb 2009
Format:Paperback
Having read many books both factual and historical about the Silk Road it is really pleasing that at long last a book which both describes and illustrates this long, often difficult and exciting journey across Asia has been produced. The text is both interesting and easy to understand, and the illustrations and photographs finish off this ,for me,a fasinating subject.Oh how I would love to follow armed with my video camera and make a film about it1

5.0 out of 5 stars silk road 10 Nov 2009
Format:Paperback
This book gives a very compact but snapshot account of the Silk Road covering 13 countries from China to Turkey. For more detailed reading a more specalist volume(of which there are many) is necessary.
The Silk Road which has been in existance for thousands of years starts in Xian,China passes west to Anxi where it divides into three -north ,central and south all rejoining at Kashgar where it again divides into multiple divisions and branches the main one ending at Istanbul but there is evidence that the road spread into Europe as far as Rome and Venice
The book is an excellent effort by the authors who have produced a very good guide for a difficult subject. The pictures are first class.
With air and sea travel the Silk Road has lost its origional purpose but is now a tourist magnet.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Silk Road - Insight Guide 23 Sep 2010
Format:Paperback
An essential guide to the Silk Road. Easy to readUzbekistan: The Golden Road to Samarkand (Odyssey Uzbekistan) with beautiful photos.
It will give you a good understanding of the history of the Silk Road.
This book goes into details about the architecture, landscape and customs of each country of the Silk Road.
However do not ever think of taking that book along on your travels unless you are ready to go beyond your
weight allowance with the airline.
This is a good bedside reading before your travels - it will wet your appetite - and on return - it will keep
the magic alive.
This guide is a good companion to "Uzbekistan - The golden Road to Samarkand" (Mcleod and Mayhew)
