Product Description

Product Description

This brand new edition provides a comprehensive and highly visual introduction to Oxford; over 600 superb photographs capture the rich history, local people and variety of everyday life in 'the city of dreaming spires'. The 'Places' section provides a detailed, district-by-district exploration of all the places to visit, from the hub of the University and around Broad Street to the rivers, meadows, abbeys and city outskirts. There is also information for those wanting to travel a little further afield, to Stratford-upon Avon, Warwick or maybe the North Cotswolds. Each place chapter is colour-coded to correspond with the orientation map inside the front cover for easy navigation at a glance and all principal sites along the way are clearly cross-referenced by number to the full-colour maps found throughout the guide. Expanded and updated restaurant listings feature the best eateries to suit all budgets within each area, providing the address, phone number, opening times and price range, followed by a useful review. A brand new 'Editor's Choice' section illustrates everything you simply can't afford to miss, including lesser-known attractions, family activities and money-saving hints. Expert local writers provide authoritative essays on the city's long and fascinating history along with interesting cultural features on the city's infamous colleges, literature and beautiful architecture. Special photo features offer visual coverage of the city's major sights and more unusual attractions. A fully-indexed street atlas enables instant orientation, helping you to navigate around the city with ease and also plots restaurants, bars and cafes. The comprehensive 'Travel Tips' section provides all the essential information you'll need for a hassle-free trip, covering how to get there, getting around, where to stay and what to do. There is also a handy A-Z of summarised practical advice and contact details, arranged alphabetically for quick reference. The unique combination of insightful exploration alongside extensive practical advice makes this guide a fascinating background read and an invaluable on-the-spot companion.

I really liked this city guide, normally I buy "eyewitness travel guides" but since I didn't find one on Oxford I opted to buy this one. I really enjoyed the info that was mentioned in the book and I would recommend this one to every one

The best travel guide ever 19 July 2010
By E. H. P. Killeffer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is an outstanding travel guide: well-researched, well-written and well-organized. The text and photos are extremely engaging and there is a wealth of information about every single place of interest in the city. As a prospective visitor who will be doing a lot of walking, I'm going to have a real challenge to see everything this book recommends in the city's center alone in the time I will have. This is my first experience with the Insight City Guides collection (it was purchased on spec), and I assume that it is typical of their other city guides. I award them top marks, with honors. Having read this one cover to cover, I feel as if I have already visited the City of Dreaming Spires.
