Sadly age catches up with all of us, so I was not looking for the sort of guide that I would have pounced on forty or fifty years ago!
The Insight Guide gave my wife and I everything we wanted. Two to three kilometer walks around Nice and Menton.
Nearby Cannes, Antibes, St Tropez, as well as other areas, also feature in the Guide, but our stay in Nice was short, as we were mainly there to see the February Carnival Parade and the Carnival Flower Parade.
However, we did find time to spend a day in Menton. We went there to see one of the world's greatest festivals, La Fête du Citron (Lemon Festival), a unique event which must be seen to be believed. But the Insight Guide came into its own as well, as we found the walk around this sleepy town most interesting.
If you are looking for a town or city guide, with Nice as your base, that is designed to take you on short walks through the most interesting parts of Nice and the nearby towns, with recommended places to stop off en route for a quiet drink or a meal, then this is for you.
There is also a concise A-Z covering the 'do's and dont's', a limited hotel and restaurant guide, a tour following sections of the three parallel Corniche roads and the route for a driving tour round the Massif des Maures, which looks really interesting.
However, for the energetic, for the young and active backpackers, or for those that want a more detailed and descriptive town guide, then this guide might seem just a little light weight, so they should probably look elsewhere.
For those that want to take advantage of a slim and easy to carry, concise guide, with 14 tailor-made itineraries and a detailed pull out map thrown in, then go for it!
