A much needed book.,
By John Holt (Holmfirth, w. yorks, GB) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Insider Art (Hardcover)
Matthew Meadows well researched and illustrated book looking at the art produced in secure institutions, prisons and secure psychiatric hospitals is a much needed publication featuring the significance and art making for people incarcerated, often for many years and how creativity provides a means of significant expression and indeed a mechanism for understanding and exploring self and the world in which they live. It is also significant that many of these "insiders" only began to make art when they were incarcerated giving strength to the theory that people use symbols and language to articulate their lives particularly when they are thrust into confinement.
An excellent introduction by Turner prize winner Grayson Perry in which he states "This is an important book for it puts forward a powerful case for a more compassionate prison system without passing judgement; it just says look, these people have made mistakes but they make beautiful art". I for one agree with Grayson's observation and wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone involved in the management of secure institutions to artists and more to inspire those who find themselves for what ever reason confined "inside" prisons and secure psychiatric hospitals that art make a difference to their lives. This is a worthy book, a true inspiration to all of the prisoner artists whose contributions it contains, and to all prisoners who are pursuing the arts.

A need for art, especially in prison.,
This review is from: Insider Art (Hardcover)
This is a most interesting collection of works of art, by people who live out of sight. A group of people for whom Art is a lifeline, a means of expression, an exploration into something new. Painting as a means of survival and exploration. A most interesting book. Something different.
