Product Description

Revered blues-jazz-R&B singer Catherine Russell s third album for World Village, Inside This Heart Of Mine, showcases the ever-deepening interpretive wiles of her ripe, honey-dipped alto, as she personifi es the living heart and proud history of each of the 13 songs that make up this set. Opening with the title tune, a Fats Waller torcher that paces like a disappointed lover pulling an all-nighter, she then launches into All the Cats Join In, a sepia-tone snapshot from the heyday of 1940s swing. On Troubled Waters, she is a misunderstood but undeniably shady lady, her musky musings shadowed by a scorching muted trumpet and speaking solo piano that abet -- and perhaps contradict -- her hopes of redemption. November, a lyrical, poetic vignette, likens the dark turn of the year to loneliness and heartbreak, while a plangent banjo and rueful fi ddle mark Just Because You Can, in which a man is warned to straighten out or take the consequences. Whether demanding stamina from lover (Long, Strong and Consecutive), playfully bemoaning the evils of the demon alcohol (Quiet Whiskey), or celebrating New Orleans-style swagger (Struttin With Some Barbeque), Catherine is never less than achingly feminine, impassioned, genuine, vulnerable -- and utterly indomitable.

Catherine's new album carries on from where her 2008 CD 'Sentimental Streak' left off - this is more traditional mainstream jazz played by a smallish band, that unlike the bands of many of her contemporaries contains horns. So this isn't the trance jazz of Norah Jones but (rather in the style of Cassandra Wilson)there are concessions to the blues with Willie Dixon's "Spoonfull", which rather radically is done with banjo and tuba and surprisingly it works. "Slow as molasses" features wonderful New Orleans-style brass (and banjo) and "Just because you can" features Hot Club-style violin (and banjo?!?) but apart from that I found much of the backing unmemorable. "November" is a nice ballad, "Troubled waters" is a nice laid-back blues and the album finishes on a high with the swinging "Struttin' with some BBQ". I'm afraid that for me this is very much background music, I find that Catherine's voice doesn't have the character of some of her contemporaries and while the backing is very tasteful and well-played it doesn't really encourage me to listen further.

Stellar. 22 April 2010
By David S. Chamberlain - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Catherine Russell's standard of excellence leaves no room for a half-hearted recording. She has the chops to tackle practically anything under the sun- jazz and blues get mentioned as her touchstones but she also has taken on Hank Williams' music with great results. Her phrasing is worthy of study by any singer- she "inhabits" a song.
She is also fearless. Her choice of material might be shunned by any other performer as too "old fashioned" but that's her gift, taking neglected songs from eons ago and letting them breathe again. Catherine is part singer, part music archaeologist!
"Inside This Heart Of Mine" is very well recorded and has the benefit of some brilliant,all-star sidemen. In particular, Matt Munisteri, guitarist and banjoist shines with his tart solos and his comfy rhythm guitar style. Jon-Erik Kellso also beams brightly in the trumpet chair and trombonist John Allred has a gorgeous tone. Incidentally, Matt's CD, "Love Story" is a small treasure.
So, "Inside This Heart Of Mine" is a highly likable offering, done with respect and without affectation.
Pay attention to Catherine- hey, this is a SINGER!

The Goddess of Blues & Swing 20 April 2010
By Scouttrane - Published on Amazon.com

This is one excellent collection of songs by one amazing vocalist! Catherine Russell's voice has never sounded better, full of clarity and emotion and sass. The arrangements are tight and energetic, and the overall ensemble just swings and swings and swings. Cat has channeled more moxie into this effort than most people can muster up in a lifetime. Catherine Russell is a treasure, and this CD only reinforces that truth!

Wow! if you don't know this artist, Listen Up! 28 Jan. 2012
By Grady Harp - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
CATHERINE RUSSELL is a phenomenon. This listener is not sure why she went unnoticed until a close firend called attention to her. Catherine Russell can sing! She has a style that is at once uniquely her own, but there are echoes of the great singers of the past that she brings a nod to - Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Bessie Smith the cabaret atmosphere of Josephine Baker etc. But this lady knows how to sing as though she has been trained by a classical singer. Her pitch is perfect, her phrasing is commensurate with each of the tunes she elects to sing, she makes the songs she sings seem like such a good time that they are immediately infectious.

A little background history (for those who are just discovering Russell) follows: `Jazz and blues vocalist Catherine Russell, a native of New York City, was born with distinctive bloodlines. Her father was Luis Russell, the renowned big-band leader who was born in Panama, and lived in New Orleans and New York City. He was a groundbreaking vintage jazzman -- a pianist, composer/arranger, and most prominently, the music director for Louis Armstrong in the mid-'40s. Her mother is Carline Ray, a veteran jazz bassist, vocalist, graduate of the Julliard and Manhattan Schools of Music, and famous for performing with the International Sweethearts of Rhythm, Mary Lou Williams, and Wynton Marsalis, among many others. Naturally Catherine Russell is influenced by old-time blues and jazz singers like Bessie Smith, Ruth Brown, and Etta James, as well as the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Nancy Wilson, Abbey Lincoln, gospel and opera music. But she was a late bloomer, not establishing a recording career as a leader until much later in life. She has appeared at numerous festivals and on nationally syndicated radio and television shows. As a backup singer, she has worked with Paul Simon, David Bowie, Steely Dan, Cyndi Lauper, Jackson Browne, Rosanne Cash, Joan Osborne, and Madonna. Singing jazz with groups including bassist Earl May, pianist Larry Ham, drummer Eddie Locke, or Jimmy Wormworth, Russell emerged as a retro old-school vocalist for the ages.'

Russell's brilliant album INSIDE THIS HEART OF MINE is greatly enhanced by her backup musicians - pianist Mark Shane, Matt Munisteri on guitar or banjo, and a horn section with trumpeter Jon-Erik Kellso, trombonist John Allred, and veteran tuba master Howard Johnson . The sound behind her is a quasi-big band sound and works extraordinarily well for the selection of songs she presents. This is clearly one of the most satisfying marriages of jazz and blues out today. Watch for more soon. Grady Harp, January 12

A Fun and Lively Album 14 May 2010
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com

I heard a clip of Catherine Russell on NPR and loved her voice. I ordered her CD and I'm so glad I did. She sings like a reincarnation of Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday combined and her band has this irresistible New Orleans sound like the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The songs are a mix of old favorites and new material, all with witty, bright lyrics and sung with a great interpretation. Most of all, this as a happy recording; it gets your toes tapping and you want to sing along with songs like "Barbecue" and "We the People". Catherine Russell is a real discovery for me and I would recommend this CD to anyone who likes upbeat jazz vocals and old time swing-jazz.
