A lot of hard work has gone into this collection and it is expensive. The downside is, the charts need page turns which make it difficult for the student when playing along with the tracks, plus there are only six charts. More shorter charts would of been easier for the learner but there is a lot of useful information in both the book and on the D V D.

Fairly Average - More helpful books elsewhere... 6 Oct. 2010

I bought this book hoping it would be a good start point to big band drumming.
I give it 3 stars because it's poorly laid out and is very cluttered in how the music is written. It explains things fairly briefly and there are NO track markings for the audio CD, it just says 'MP3' and you have to trawl through all the tracks to find which one it is referring to.
Also, many of the mp3 egs do NOT have a count in, which is not very helpful when you are trying to practice along...
The book has many pages, but it you want value for money, you would do better if you spread your purchases over a few different books eg "Chart reading workbook for drummers" (which explains everything beautifully, and has audio tracks that are tagged properly and are referred to clearly throughout), and another book that tackles these things in a more inviting way.

I feel like returning it, but would probably cost me more to post back than it's worth... (from Australia...)

Great idea gone wrong. 19 Mar. 2012

This is a very good idea and both the drumming and the band are excellent, however; the notation of the charts is disgraceful, and speaking as a professional 'Big Band Drummer' with more than 35 years experience, these are definitely not the sort of charts an aspiring drummer would ever see. The examples showing how to play phrases are very good but there is no written explanation of why a particular figure would be played this way. A great shame.

Very Good 12 Jun. 2013

Covers all aspects of big band reading, good exercises, tips, interviews with top drummers, and charts to play-along with discs. One of the discs is a video showing Steve playing the charts. I don't give it five stars because I feel one of the charts is too long and could have been written in a better way.
