Book Description

The ultimate story of America's most dominant warriors, Team 6 of the US Navy SEALS, written by a longtime member and trainer of the elite group.

About the Author

Don Mann (CWO3, USN) has for the last thirty years been associated with the Navy SEALS either as a platoon member, assault team member, boat crew leader, or advanced training officer; and more recently program director preparing civilians to go to BUD/s (SEAL Training). Up until 1998 he was on active duty with SEAL Team 6. Since his retirement, he has deployed to the Middle East on numerous occasions in support of the war against terrorism. Many of the active duty SEALs on SEAL Team 6 are the same guys he taught how to shoot, conduct ship and aircraft takedowns, and trained in urban, arctic, desert, and river and jungle warfare, as well as Close Quarters Battle (CQB) and Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT). He has suffered two broken backs, two cases of high altitude pulmonary edema and multiple broken bones, in training or service. He has been captured twice during operations and lived to talk about it.

Co-writer Ralph Pezzullo is a New York Times bestselling author and award-winning playwright, screenwriter and journalist. His books include Jawbreaker (with CIA operative Gary Berntsen).

It was inevitable following the Bin Laden raid that a steady stream of former NAVSPECWAR operators would take the opportunity of writing their memoirs describing their times with the Teams. Inside SEAL team six is former DEVGRU Green Team Chief Don Mann's offering to the growing SEAL autobiography library. The moment you open the cover though, the biggest dissapointment is immediately apparent. Mann's script has been subjected to the censors, and material deemed classified has been blacked out throughout the book... including the index. Anyone who has read more than a handful of SEAL books or the internet should be able to fill in the blanks fairly comfortably, but the decision to leave whole pages of blackout in the the book is annoying to say the least and has a smug whiff of "If it tell you... I have to kill you". Sure Don, but thats why we bought the book. Blanking out extends beyong classified Ops to phrases related to Richard Marcinko, 1st SFOD-D, DEVGRU... and so on. (Yawn) Chapter One starts in Somalia, refers to more blacked out training of the Egyptian commando raid squad and then moves on to the Op to disable (more blankety-blank)a vessel that sounds very much like the Panamanian registered Ariadne that "grounded" off Mog in August '85 carrying a load of chemical substances that could have been used to produce WMD's. Don recounts his chequered childhood through to BUDS, some graphic medical stuff in Goatlab, ST1 CT training, DEVGRU Green team (Not really sure why they had to blank that out?)and then some good stuff in Central America, much of which has survived the censors black marker. By the end of that though, Don's career is winding up and his focus shifts to the extreme endurance events that have been in the background throughout the book.Read more ›

The only really interesting parts of the book have been redacted. This means there are words, sentences, and even whole pages of blanked out text. Apart from annoying the reader there is no point in printing blanked out text. It seems to say, look how much I know that you never will.
The books only real use is as a training guide to extreme adventure races, which wasn't what I wanted to buy.

A very well written book. From a kid who's life nearly took wrong paths, to the honest SEAL-operator who was also a medic. Reads like a novel, but tells a true story full of adrenalin-soaked adventures.
Some (text-)parts are blacked-out by the US government because it was still too classified... What a pity.
So far I've read a number more books about the Special Forces, including Delta-Force, but nothing seems to beat the versatile Navy SEALs, with ST-6 on top!
I am currently ordering all Don Mann's works, including a Survival guide and a novel: I can hardly wait.
