Inside Out by Mary O'Sullivan,
This review is from: Inside Out (Paperback)
For the past twenty years Meg Enright has been married to John the couple met when Meg was on a night out with her best friend Lynn Rooney and the three have remained close friends ever since. John and Meg now have two children who are now almost grown up and fully independent. Meg and Lynn are running a successful business together and John is running a storage company. John lives and breathes for his job, his whole life now revolves around his work and he is spending less and less time with his family. When Carrie, Meg and John's daughter seems to be missing while on a trip abroad and Meg becomes concerned about her daughter's well being, she finds that she does not get the support she needs from John. Not knowing that John had got his own concerns due to the fact that the receptionist at the company that John is running Francine Keyes has accused John of sexual harassment and is now blackmailing John for her silence. So Meg turns to her oldest friend Lynn for help. But Lynn's got things on her mind she has been keeping a secret for almost half her life, she is in love with a man and living with the pain of knowing that her love will never be returned and must remain a secret. Can Meg find the strength to cope when the truth begins to unravel without the people she thought she could count on in difficult times? For those of you that read my blog regularly you will be probably be able to tell by now that I am a big fan of Mary O'Sullivan books. Inside Out is the fifth book I have read by this brilliant author and I can tell you that Mary O'Sullivan books do not disappoint each book is just as good as the last. All Mary's books are completely different stories about peoples lives. Told by a fantastic storyteller that really makes you feel for the characters that she really brings to life. Each page of her words drawing you into the characters world that you almost feel you can reach out and touch them.

Inside Out by Mary O'Sullivan,
By jofromoz (Victoria, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Inside Out (Paperback)
Inside Out Inside Out is a story about a normal family trying to live a normal life. The wife, Meg has her curtain business with her best friend Lynn, the husband John has his business which he runs now his partner Patrick is retired. Their daughter Carrie has gone to USA for a 3 month stint with her school friends and falls in love with a boy whose father has founded a cult. Their son Tommy was battling with hormones as a teenager wanting desperately to be a man. Trouble is stirred when John hires a PA, Francine Keyes who seduces John to a point of no-return and she then wastes no time in black mailing him. She has her eye on the business, but not just John's 40%, she wants Patrick's 60% also and works on the old man who is now very ill. Many emotions come into play when John realises he has deep feelings for their long time friend Lynn; Meg realises she is unhappy and lonely in her marriage; Tommy is torn between being a loyal friend to his buddy from the wrong side of town and his parents' directions; Carrie is in love and can see nothing wrong with her father's-in-law-to-be cult. Lynn has loads of guilt when she finds her feelings for John have never died, but can she possibly be with her best friend's ex-husband should they ever divorce?
Francine gets her come-uppance when Patrick's 'nephew' arrives to take over the running of the business with John. The depth of the emotions felt by each character was credible and keeps the reader wanting to learn more and more. A real page-turner. I would recommend this to anyone who likes a good story about everyday folk that isn't all about boy gets girl, boy loses girl, boy wins girl back. This is a story you can get your teeth into, and then sit and ponder what you would do in those circumstances yourself.

Difficult to like the characters,
This review is from: Inside Out (Paperback)
Inside Out tells the story of a turbulent few weeks in the life of the Enright family. At the beginning of the book everything seems to fall apart for them. Meg and John Enright's relationship has gone cold, their daughter Carrie is missing in the US and their son Tommy is hanging out with a bad crowd. To top it all off John's secretary Francine Keyes seems to have it in for him and threatens to ruin his career and his reputation.
One of the difficulties I had with this book is that I didn't really like any of the characters. I think that we are supposed to feel sorry for Meg but I found it difficult to do so because she does nothing to help herself. She complains about her marriage troubles to her best friend and business partner Lynn but she doesn't even try to talk to John about them. Her two children Carrie and Tommy were not realistic and John came across as selfish and stupid. Overall, it was an ok read, and as I got closer to the end I did really want to find out what happened to all of them. I also liked what happened with John's business although I don't want to say much about that for fear of ruining the book. I probably wouldn't recommend this book to someone else, though. It's not my cup of tea but it may be suitable as a light read for someone. Perhaps I found it difficult to identify with Meg because my life is so different to that of a 39-year-old mother of two.
