Synopsis

Am extremely critical examination of the effect the hosting of the Olympic games has on the host cities. Including a number of case studies, Lenskyj (sociology, U. of Toronto, Canada) argues that the process of selecting hosts is an incredibly corrupt process that serves to further enrich local elites, bilk taxpayers out of millions of dollars, and --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

In looking for information of the true nature of the Olympics, it was this book which yeilded the most genuine, factual information. THis made a weelcome change from the usual focus-group'd adverts which we usually see of the world-spanning marketing and land-pritatising business that is 'The Olympics'.

Critisising the Olympics is like critisising Tarzan - how can anyone be so rude as to question something so plainly heroic and inspirationsl? Yet, under the lofty ideals and inspirational gloss of the Olympics Machine (That inspires thousands all over the world to devote themselves selflessly to training for it - the true Spirit of the Olympics) is a business which takes that wonderful idealism which could change the world for the better and makes it into a money-spinning con which feeds muultinational greed at the expense of the taxpayer.

Whist the structure of the Olympics appears to be transparent, the facts themselves are more obscure and it is a great achievement by Helen Lensky that she has been able to uncover and make clear so much.
If you care about sport, about idealism or simply why your hard-earned cash is going into the pockets of the Super-Rich for an event to which you are not invited, read this book.
It will make more sense of your Olympic Experience.
