Product Description

This is the second edition of the remarkable 'Inside Lives', expanded with a chapter on the last years of the life cycle. It provides a perspective on the relationship between psychoanalytic theory and the nature of human development which has not been available in written form. A volume from the Tavistock Clinic Series, this book traces the interplay between influences - internal and external - which contribute to a person's character strength and sense of identity.

Highly Readable 1 May 2010
I loved this book and read it in one sitting. it links psycho-analytical concepts to life stages, with some emphasis on Kleinian thought. I liked that Waddel makes extensive use of case studies and also makes links with literature. I wouldn't recommend it if you have read no psycho-analytical works as it assumes that you have some basic knowledge in this field. That said you by no means need to be a therapist to understand this book, you just need to be interested in therapy and in people.

This is a highly accessible text on the development of personality and the role of psychoanalysis. It is beautifully written, unfolding the inside story that is the inner life of the individual, and explores the way in which early interactions and experiences can have a profound effect on how we experience the world. Waddell uses illuminating case studies, as well as her own academic background in English Literature, to enliven and illustrate the work. Inside Lives is written with a clarity and simplicity of style that facilitates thinking about the underlying theories.
