I've bought too many halloween books for my kids but this one's a favourite!
The illustrations are colourful, quirky and fun.
It's easy and fun to read - easy for a listener to follow whether or not they're looking at the pictures.
It's full of your usual halloween 'characters': monster, spider, ghost, cat, haunted house, bats, owl, mummy and skeleton so your child can familiarise him or herself with them without anything creepy about it.

The story flows quickly (it's one of those stories you can read so fast you end up taking a dramatic big breath at the end of a paragraph!) and can't help but bring a smile and a giggle. Maybe not ideal for the excitable child at bedtime but very enjoyable nonetheless.

It starts with 'Here is a house that is haunted' and an illustration of a house in starlight with broken shutters etc. and then the fun starts...

'Here is a hand that knocked on the door outside a house that is haunted.(picture of a green frankenstein's monster-type hand)
'Here is the hand that knocked on the door...and startled the spider that dropped to the floor inside a house that is haunted'.

As the story goes on, with a delightful illustration to match each new action/character the knock startles the spider, the spider drops to the floor and frightens a ghost who wakes up and cries 'boo', surprising a cat that screeched 'mew', who shook up bats that flew through the air , which jolted an owl that called 'who, who's there?', spooking a mummy who ran with a shriek, rattling a skeleton who moved with a creak, waking a monster who stomps on huge feet, who throws open the door to hear 'trick or treat!'...
...giving all the startled creatures such a fright they run out of the haunted house!

We normally stay away from books with "living dead" themes, but this one was very cute and the read-along format was a big hit with my 6 year old son. The pictures are big, colorful, and funny, and the rhyming verse makes it easy to remember what has happened so far. An excellent choice for halloween time!

My Kindergartener loved it. By the middle of the story he was reading parts himself and has asked for other books like it. The illustrations and the verse was extremely entertaining and captures their attention each time it it read.

My 4 year old son has requested this book every night since we bought it several weeks ago. He has the first several phrases memorized. The illustrations are wonderful and have him captivated. We highly recommend this fun story.

This interactive book encourages a child to join in the fun! 6 Oct. 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
This story is a Halloween favorite at our house. It encourages a child to join in the fun of telling the story along with you, as each page adds another "monster" to the storyline. The child recalls the sequence of events and proudly recites them as the story progresses.

great use of repetition and pictures 2 July 2008
By JulieRez - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
My son received this from his preschool teachers on the last day of school. It was an instant hit and favorite bed time story.

The layout of the book has text on one side of the page and illustration on the other. The book starts with "Here is the hand that knocks on the door" and shows a monster's green hand. Page 2 continues with "Here is the hand that knocks on the door, that startles the spider....", and shows a picture of a spider. Each new page builds on the previous sentence and adds on to the story. On and on we go through the house until the reader finds out who is at the door.

The text of the story is peppered with pictures replacing of some of the words (so where it says "here is the hand", the word 'hand' is replaced by the picture of the green monster's hand).

What I've found when reading this story to my 3 year old, is that having the pictures interwoven with the text is helping him to notice that there are words on the page instead of just focusing on the illustrations. Now I find him trying to follow along with the text as I read the words. I'm not a teacher, so I can't comment on whether this will help in teaching kids to read, but I think we've stumbled onto something here.

I would definitely recommend this story for preschool aged children.
