Product Description

Product Description

"Eight months ago, having knocked out one sports story too many, I decided it was time for a change. It was time to quit the world of online journalism, time to stock up on woolly sweaters from M&S and time to retrain as a primary school teacher...Arriving like a typical teacher, in a suit and car worth roughly equal amounts of money and sporting recently squashed glasses held together by superglue, I was taken on a school tour of such overwhelming size that I'd started to forget the beginning even before we were half way around. However, I had at least learnt the whereabouts of the essentials; the Year One class room that will act as my base, the resources cupboard, the IT suite, the library, the gents toilets and, should it ever get a bit too much, the exit." So begins "Inside Guide to Training as a Teacher". Engagingly written, witty and non-conformist, Jon Barbuti gets to the heart of what it is really like to be a trainee teacher. Covering issues as diverse as staff meetings, INSET days, behaviour management and essay writing, this guide will provide advice and inspiration for new teachers everywhere.

About the Author

Recently Jon Barbuti gave up a glamorous career as a sports commentator in the national press to train as a teacher. He is currently studying hard in the Institute of Education at Manchester Metropolitan University.

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable guide for those in / considering teaching, 13 Jun 2006
By A. Price - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was considering teacher training, and came across this book whilst researching online. I found it an honest assessment of the course and the joys of facing a classroom of children for the first time. It was intelligently & humourously written (very British Bill Bryson in style I thought), and highly recommend it.

I happened upon this book whilst trolling around the books aimed at the teaching profession. I feel it has clarified my desire to break into the teaching profession after completing my degree as a mature student.
Witty, honest, easy to read, Excellent!

3.0 out of 5 stars Teacher, 29 Sep 2009
By Nm Rawlinson "Bing" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book gives an incite into teaching from the prospective of a student, the guy who writes it is quite funny but some parts of the book are a bit repetitive. If you are thinking of buying the book I would recommend it as it gives quite a few tips about making an application for teacher training and also as a support if you have just started the PGCE course.
