Awesome book!!! Michael Chabries tells the story of James Brown like no other. It is obvious that he was granted access to Brown's inner circle giving us the TRUE story of this great man's fascinating life. I can't wait for another book from him!
Rich in history and a treasure for his fans, Daryl Brown's INSIDE THE GODFATHER allows us to know the man behind the fame 20 Nov. 2014

Everyone knows James Brown the Godfather of Soul, but it is James Brown the man that seems to be the most fascinating.

His son, Daryl Brown, has pulled together an intimate portrait of his father and the thoughts of those who knew him best in the fascinating book INSIDE THE GODFATHER.

There was SO MUCH about James Brown that I didn't know that this book helped to fill in, thus giving a more complete picture of a man who truly belonged to the world. Through firsthand accounts we get to know the James Brown who gave generously, was courted by the Islamic faith and whose celebrity and star power reached amazing levels but he still felt the confines of the color of his skin.

Daryl also shares sage lessons that his father taught him, allowing us to realize that he was about more than just building a legacy for himself. He wanted to create something that was long-lasting for his family and those he loved as well.

When it came to his death there are still some questions that I believe will remain unanswered, but what the book does do is give us insight into the man up 'til that point, and allows us to see how even in death he is able to remain larger than life.

Definitely something that fans of his music and history in general will savor, INSIDE THE GODFATHER is the gateway into getting to know the man who made us all 'feel good'.
Really Missed! 13 Nov. 2014

After many starts and stops, I finished this book and totally enjoyed getting the perspectives of people who spent a lot of time with the Godfather revealing different sides to him. I admit, there were some laughable moments here but sad ones as well. We all think we want to trade places with entertainers, but many have it hard. James did. Coming up in the Jim Crow south and being treated differently from the white race at that time. He still persevered and we, that loved his music, are better for it. Three of my favorite songs that I still enjoy playing today: Think, You've Got the Power and I Lost Someone.

Thanks to the contributors and Daryl for giving us a peek.

INSIDE THE GODFATHER ...isn't. Daryl Brown, son of James Brown and Michael P. Chabries miss badly in the effort. Badly. Hard to read and extremely choppy, it just isn't worth the effort . There are much better books out there on James Brown. The efforts of George "Spike " Nealy II with in the book save it from a one star rating.

NOTE: The publisher of the book sent me a free copy in return for an unbiased review.

The cohesion of the writing could have been better but there were some recounts from certain people in His life that were interesting. Still could have been better!
